Installing an old PC harddrive to ps2 question?

I have an old harddrive that (it still has useless old pc files and a old windows OS) I would like to test out on my ps2, my question is do I need to erase the harddrive first or can i just install it? Or can I just reformat it directly with the ps2?

hdloader will format your HD if it needs to be. i used an old 8gb for testing and it works fine.

so the HDD does not have to be more that 40gig
