Incomplete HDL_Dump binary release ?!?
Incomplete HDL_Dump binary release ?!? –
04-19-2005,05:50 PM
Edit: The problem described below is solved, and I was mistaken.
Edit: I believed I had the 48-bit server installed, but somehow it
Edit: had been mixed up with another one, lacking 48-bit support
Edit: Sorry about any confusion this thread may have caused...
Edit: However, my main point of all this is STILL valid, as the
Edit: HDL_Dump release page really should have a 48-bit enabled
Edit: version of hdld_svr available for download.
I believe that the HDL_Dump binary release available at the home site, hosted here at PS2-Scene, is incomplete and needs to be complemented by additional binaries for full 48-bit LBA support. Having just the 48-bit patched server does not seem to help, so the other parts may also need to be recompiled. Others have mentioned problems with this previously, but it is only now that I have been able to test such things myself, as described further below.
It would be best if the author of HDL_Dump could make a complete set of binaries available, including variants both with and without 48-bit support, for each of the prgroams in the HDL_Dump project. (HDLD_SVR.ELF, HDL_Dump.exe, HDL_Dumb.exe) But until that happens, a good interim solution would be for someone else (Zero-X ?) to provide patched/recompiled versions of at least HDLD_SVR and HDL_Dump, for easy download from a thread here.
I've just switched over from my old 80GB HDD to a new one with 200GB, and have installed all the 60+ games I have on it, as well as some stuff in non-game partitions. This left me with 31GB free, meaning that I have definitely passed the 128GB limit, making 48-bit support necessary for all tools to handle my latest game partitions, as well as any future ones.
The main bulk of the games were installed by WinHIIP v1.6.6, after copying the stuff from my old disk to the new one. After that copying, and then again after all the games were installed, I tested the new disk in my PS2 to rebuild the games list and test that everything worked flawlessly, which it did. I've also tested that the games installed beyond the 128 GB limit work fine, which they do. In fact the only games that don't work at present are 4 with known compatibility problems, which I installed unpatched anyway, for experiments with future patched HDL variants.
However, I don't believe in wearing out the connectors mating NA to PS2, so I want to do all future installations over network (as my PS2 laser is bad and won't read DVD). This is where I turn to HDL_Dump (which I've used a lot with my old disk), but unfortunately this doesn't work right now. Using either 'toc' or 'hdl_toc' commands in HDL_Dump leads to eternal lockup. My hub shows both leds flashing during the lockup, so it is not a networking problem, which is further proved by the PS2 (HDLD_SVR rather) responding correctly to the 'poweroff' command.
Having read some of the documentation for HDLD_SVR it appears that this server only handles very 'low level' sector access, leaving all 'high level' handling of partitions and filesystems to the client program HDL_Dump. And that makes it obvious why having a server with 48-bit capability won't help at all, if the client lacks it, as the client won't be able to handle partition info/data correctly when dealing with stuff beyond the 128GB limit.
Btw: Whatever happened to all the tool attachements that were 'stickied' in the old HDD forums. Some were merely 'unstickied', while some seem to have been erased, which must have made it a lot harder for newcomers to find what they need.

Are you sure that the new version of Hdl_dump is not 48-bit compatible? It seems fine here with my 160 Gig HD. toc reads: Total device size: 152627MB, used: 101120MB, available: 51456MB
BTW: I redid my HD back in January after my compiled PS2LINK running PS2Menu fiasco.
Here is my current setup:
1. Formatted with HDD Format utility (hacked 48-bit by Zer0-x)
2. Created some dummy partitions using HDD Format utility for applications.
3. Ran hacked HD loader 48-bit by Zer0-x and crazyc to create HD Loader partition
4. Installed my 30 games some with WinHIIP and others with Hdl_dump (shrinked games with new IML's).
Earlier this month, I installed my Dads IHRA Drag Racing 2005 through the network using the 48-bit Zer0-X version of hdl_svr. I checked Hdl_dump against my excel spreadsheet space remaining and they matched so I guess all is well.
Hope you can figure out your problem.

I've tried both 0.7.3 and 0.8, with the same lockup.

101120MB is less than 99GB (exactly 98.75GB), so you have not yet passed the 128GB limit.

1. Formatted with HDD Format utility (hacked 48-bit by Zer0-x)
I used the same version, both for my big drive and the old 80GB drive.
2. Created some dummy partitions using HDD Format utility for applications.

4. Installed my 30 games some with WinHIIP and others with Hdl_dump (shrinked games with new IML's).
Same here, although that was on the old drive. They were copied over to the new drive by WinHIIP, and they work fine there. I forgot to mention it earlier, but after installing all my games, thus crossing the 128 GB limit, both HDLoader and HDD Format show correct HDD sizes (Full 189GB, Free 31GB).

Going by the figures you gave further bove, you're still well below the 128GB limit, so you don't have to worry about this yet.
Hope you can figure out your problem.
Thanks for the well-wishing, but I think I already HAVE figured it out.
The HDL_Dump available for download can't deal correctly with stuff beyond the 128GB limit.
However, just to be absolutely certain, can you please post an attachment with the server patched by Zer0-X, as I can't find the one he posted anymore. (It's one of the files that seem to have been erased from the thread where it was posted, due to the HDD forum reorganisation.) I should already be using that version, but it's worth making a comparison to see if I've made a mixup somewhere.

yeah I haven't gone over the limit yet but I'm making absolutely sure I'm using 48-bit compatible stuff. I guess I can only hope I don't have issues once I cross that boundary but all indicators appear ok at the moment.
here is the link to the 48-bit hdl_svr ELF.

Thanks for the link.
I'm glad to note that it still exists on this site, but a bit shocked that the search engine can't find it...!!!
I searched for "48 LBA HDLD_SVR" (excluding the quotes), which resulted in no hits at all, even though all those words are used in that post. So, it appears that the search engine is broken, probably due to the changed layout of the HDD forums...

Unfortunately; no search engine is perfect. I used toes as my search term. I remembered that Zer0-X said didn't want to step on any ones toes.

Well, whatever works for you is ok I guess, though I must say that's not the first thing that came to my mind in looking for this stuff.
Anyway, you'll be glad to know that the link you gave me did solve my problem. Somehow I'd managed to mixup the various hdld_svr ELFs, so as to end up with the wrong one installed on the PS2. I have replaced it with the correct one now (and tested that it works) so I'm good to go again.
Thanks a lot!
