I've read through a few of the posts and haven't seen an answer to this yet. Very close, but one thing is in common - modded PS2 required or official hdloader/advance.

I have a PS2 (not modded), PS2 network adaptor, HD for PS2 (not official sony), a HD enclosure, USB leads and a lot of spare time.

I don't have HDLoader/advance....

* Is it possible to format the HD for PS2 via my PC with the enclousure? If so how? - I think I've seen the answer to this - winhiip.
* Can I then FTP in to the PS2 and send games to the HD without hdloader or advance?
* Can I boot from the memory card, again without hdloader or advance?

I've seen that it can be done if you have HDLoader or Advance, but I don't have them.

Am I attempting the impossible?

a standard ide disk can be placed in a pc and formated in winhiip.
The hdloader can also do this the first time it starts and recon the ide disk.

to send isofiles u probebly want to use hdldump http://hdldump.psx-scene.com/
A router i recomended for easy setup, but a crossover network cable is ok to.

Booting hdloader from memcard without disk u first of need the hdloader07c.elf file. can be found on the net or maybe asking someone thru pm here might be possible
then u need a chip that have dev mode 1 or 2 suport, matrix infinity, dms and so on...

devmode1 = booting elf file on mc://boot/boot.elf
devmode2 = booting elf file from hd://_boot/boot.elf

to get the elf file on your mc u might want to burn a cd with launchelf and your hdloader file. using the browserfunktion in ulaunchelf.

jepp thats also a way to boot elfs from mc. but u do need a ps1 game everytime u want to trigger it.

yep, but it does work great, and it seems he needs the 'cog swap trick'

basicly u pull open ur ps2 cd-rom tray wit ha plastic hook, so u wont have to press eject wich triggers a system reboot.

without that system reboot u are able to run a copied cd, in this case the 'independence exploit install cd'

when the files are copied, u can use ps2 menu (i believe) to copy anything from MC, DVD, CD, HDD or USB.

u can make the plastic hook thingie yourself.

I've formatted it and experimented with a game I have. Do they go across to the HD as iso files?

So basically to get to do the memory card exploit I need to do the swap trick or have hd loader? There's no way of doing it through ftp?

swap trick and cog swap are 2 different thingsi believe.

Shouldn't u first be able to LOAD an ftp server on ur ps2 then ?
Yes, u should, but that is unsigned code i.e. homebrew. Soooo.....
