automan has got a standard IDE HDD working with the PSTwo v12 console. Up until now, the only way of accomplishing this was through the upcoming (in final debug stage now, release pending) USB-Loader using an external USB HDD. Although quite vague, according to automan his method is is done "via a combination of hardware and software modifications."

However, automan also states that "it is not released yet, nor it will not be publically released in future. If we ever see this method to be available, it will be done either by a team that will join me in order to manufacture this discovery, or by someone kind enough to develop a free solution for all us PSTwo owners.

The Main premise of the HDLoader for the old ps2 was so people could install games onto a device other then the dvd rom and make it easier to play games and one could have theie entire coll of games in one spot, this will of course effectively do the same thing (if it is true) but will still the problem of the people not wanting to void the warranty or run the chance of wrecking the machine, this will only please the public who dont care about the machine and they would probably have mod chip in anyways. I still dont think that this will please the masses as much as a Usb loader would, but then the other question comes up, is usb 1.1 fast enough??

Not likely to happen any time soon.

I state for a fact, since I traced the lines myself on another product that uses the same chip, that the PStwo DOES have IDE capability. All one has to do is attach an IDE cable to the proper pins of one chip. No software changes should be needed, since it should be able to just use the same hdd drivers the older PS2 used.

However, I see this as a harder exercise than installing most modchips. There ain't going to be a general purpose commercial solution for this. So don't anyone hold their breath.

Omegatron, I kinda was being sarcastic there but thats kewl, i think anyone that knows then scene is in the realiztion that usb 1.1 is not quick enough to handle the throughput needed to run games in the ps2, 12 Mb/s (1.5 MB/S) which is slows compared to IDE 10 - 16 MB/S. But lets not get off topic here, which i seemed to do, lets get back to the possibility of a HDD of the PsTwo, I guess it would be possible if Sony left the device in the OS and on the board, but just left the attachment there, remember it was a part of the org network adapter which now exist on board the pstwo, so you never know??

I had noticed this also but wasn't sure on the pins to connect to while comparing the network adaptor to teh components on the pstwo board

The PSX (the PVR) uses the exact same chip to connect one of its DVD lasers which is controlled by an IDE interface (the other DVD laser goes to the CDVD/mechacon).

If I have time over the next day I can snap a photo of both sides and let people at it to see where the IDE connectors leads hook up to it. I honestly don't expect much to come of it though.

Edit: honestly, I have sat on this info for a few months. I never passed it around cuz I didn't want to see someone over at another site jump at yet another chance to sell some other HDD solution, but it was only a matter of time...
