ok, it is getting very hard to get IDE drives now. i currently have a Seagate 160 in mine and a Seagate 320 in my sons(at his mothers house).
when looking online today all i could find is mostly Western Digitals. i really don't want to mod the network adaptor if i can help it . the biggest Seagate i could find was a 160, now i could just swap drives from time to time as needed but it would be better if i did not have to.
my question is i have seen a few local sites with Hitachi drives. a 500G Hitachi going for $130 to $150 AUD. i have not had any experience with Hitachi except for a laptop drive years ago. are they any good? is it worth it or should i just hack the Network adaptor to fit a WD???

first link you posted is dead.

Second link leads to a discontinued model and it's newer version won't work since it won't fit on a network adapter.

cheers guys, i have read the thread about using IDE to SATA adaptors. http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61272 (Attempt to use a 2.5" SATA 250GB HDD with a v9 PS2)
would have to come up with some way of supporting the drive once inside the PS2. in that case it would be easier to just mod the power connector on the network adaptor to fit a WD drive....
does anybody have an opinion on the Hitachi disk drives?

I would try to avoid such modification. The risk of damaging seems to be high. I would try some kind of extension cables and IDE to SATA adaptor. Or try to get a V12/V13 PS2 and modify it with hd combo. The inside of the hd combo has more space for IDE/SATA adaptors and additional extension cables.

    Best regards

i do have a spare adaptor and its the net+modem one. but it cost me $85 so i dont want to muck with it. they are too hard to find and if the one i am using stops working at least i have a backup.... looks like the site i had for the 500G no longer stock them..... 320G the biggest they have now.. damn... must try to get one tomorrow before they stop selling IDE altogether...lol

    Sigh..

NO adaptor will fit in the Phat ps2 case. NONE.

If you actually attach one of them to a hard drive, you will see the problem. They all have the IDE cable part raised up in the air, and will thus not line up with the adapter unless you cut a hole in the bottom of your PS2!

I'm looking for a way to attach a SATA hard drive to a phat ps2 without voiding it's warranty. I've yet to see one.

My best idea is to get an adapter, then use a ide extender cable and a power extender cable to bridge the gap between the hard drive and the network adapter.. Has anyone tried this?
