U can run on both cd/dvd or the memory card.
U need a PSX original cd to boot it from the memory card, not sure about the dev thingie.

I'm just a newbie, hope it answers some of your question

    So you already have a chip . . .

You can run this by creating a disc image with 3 files, HDLoader.elf, system.cnf, and a dummy file full of 0's larger than 10 MB or so.

Modify your system.cnf in notepad to point to the elf file you would like to run.

Place all files in CDGenPS2 and adjust the LBA of the system.cnf to 12231, and create the disc image to be burnt.

    Enjoy your new HDLoader CD.

PM me if you want some help.

I have no trouble applying the patches and building an iso with cdgenps2.. i've set the system.cnf to point to my custom elf and have set the lba on it to 12231, but I can't for the life of me figure out why the discs I burn won't boot in my ps2 (duo2se v4)

it seems like it should be fairly straightforward.. what am I missing?
I really want to take advantage of these latest advancements with hdlpatch 0.6d

OK Well remember that the PS2 is damn fickle about which CDs it'll boot. Everywhere I looked, I was recommended Verbatim or other quality / expensive brands. Tried a few. Nuthin. Then one day, I decided to try a Melody-RW I had kicking around. Bingo. That worked. Tried Melody-R's. Made coasters about 50% of the time but that's not bad, I figured. Then suddenly one day, I couldn't get Melody's to work anymore. It would still boot my old Melody CD but wouldn't boot newer ones. So I tried a 50-for-$10 multipack CD I bought from Walmart. That's what I've been using for 2 months now. So just try several brands with your burner and PS2. You're bound to find something that works.
