I have to agree with JNABK, though I prefer to put it even more strongly.
You should drop Faplink like a hot potato, before it fries your HDD content once more.
The modern equivalent is "HDL_Dump" which comes as a suite of three programs:
hdld_svr.elf == PS2-side server that executes commands received over LAN
hdl_dump.exe == PC-side command-line utility handling PS2 interactions over LAN
hdl_dumb.exe == PC-side GUI which invokes hdl_dump.exe for PS2 interactions
There are also other GUI programs to be used as alternates for hdl_dumb.exe
It is important to use the correct hdld_svr.elf that matches the used version of hdl_dump.exe, and for most cases this means that they should be from the same release, except for v0.8.6 of hdl_dump which uses the same hdld_svr as v0.8.5 did.

I am getting
"APA partition is broken; aborting." when trying to connect. Does it look like I need to format my hd? I'd hate to do that since I have games, elfs, and other files intalled on the hd.
If you do enventually have to reformat, you can always use uLaunchELF to rescue normal files and folders to other media first, either using a USB device or LAN (both better and faster than USB) to backup the stuff to a PC.

I set up everything as indicated in the How-To and yet HDL Dump (& dumb) says that it can't connect to my ps2.
my setup looks like this:
simple yet......it doesnt work
Can you ping the PS2 IP address?
Not without more information from you, which should include all of the following:

PS2-side HD installer server (presumably hdld_svr.elf, but we need exact version number)
When all those questions are answered we should have a clear picture of your setup, enabling us to help you.
Oh, and I almost forgot. We still want the info und0 asked you for too, on whether or not you can ping the PS2 IP and get proper responses when hdld_svr is running on the PS2. This is easily tested by opening a commandline prompt window and typing a command similar to this one:
Here aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd should be replaced by the real numbers of the PS2 IP address.
A successful response should display the response time in ms units, whereas a failed result should display a timeout message, and either one will be repeated four times unless there is a port failure of the PC LAN port, in which case you will only get one message.

So I put hdld_svr elf on usb stick and I boot it from it and it displays "Ready" on the screen. Then I connect to PS2. But when I run HDL Dump GUI on PC (XP) and I click "Refresh PS2" and I get this message
"A PS2 console could not be found on IP address: 192 168 0 10
Verify the following:
1. The PS2 console is currently running hdld_svr elf and it is fully initialized
2. The IP address you entered matches the IP address configured in mc0:sys-conf/ipconfig dat"
Am I maybe using wrong cable? I'm using 568B.2 gigabit ethernet cable.
I'm having trouble with hdl dumb-0.8.3. I'm just trying to put psx isos on my ps2hdd with hdadvance 3.0 n I cant connect to the ps2 server. I have my laptop connected directly to the ps2 network adapter. The ps2 server shows on my tv that its ip is 192.168.1.110 but on hdl dumb 0.8.3 it automatically shows 192.168.0.10. My computer shows that the ethernet is hooked up, so what am I doing wrong? I know there is a simple answer but I've been out of the game for like 7-8 years so bear with me, please!
edit: I just checked and my ethernet has an ip of 192.168.1.111 (this is really confusing me :facepalm: lol)
I know it doesnt solve your problem, but v0.8.3 is outdated. Get this : http : //psx-scene.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=412 (PC side) & this : http : //ichiba.geocities.jp/ysai187/PS2/smap.htm (PS2 side) by SP193 (use the elf file nammed IOP_PKTDRV.elf, located in SMAP DRIVER/Binaries/Testing Plateforms) &
set your ethernet with 192.168.1.0 adress. Run the elf, run hdl dump helper GUI, connect & here you are. Hope it will help.
Thanks SA! I downloaded both files and extracted them. I tried out hdl dump (way better then hdl dumb) in the same way I was before and still couldnt connect to the ps2 as I thought would happen. Now how am I supposed to get that elf file over to the ps2? I know I'm asking newbie ass questions but I have no experience with running homebrews on consoles. Only experience I have is using hd advance 3.0 7-8 years ago.
