It would appear not. I used WinHIIP to put all my games on the drive via the PC, but just tried a CD backup and a DVD backup of a game and HDadvance failed 'Not a valid PS2 game'.
So looks like you either have to put the drive back on the PC, or use HDl_dumb and do it very slowly via the FTP route.

I have a modchip - NEO4 as per my sig - and can play backups, but the backups seem to be unacceptable to HDadvance.

when using hdl/hda do yourself a favor and invest $20-$30 in an external usb hdd enclosure and get used to using winhiip or hdl_dump. it may seem like a big pain, but in reality and practice it makes things MUCH easier (not to mention quicker). then you can just install from any cd/dvd (backup or not) or from an iso.

wrt your specific problem, i don't know. i have v1 original hdl and it can install from backups when using the swap method:

1: insert high toc valid ps2 cd or dvd (depending on the backup media you're installing from)
    2: select install
3: disc will stop spinning, swap the discs
    4: confirm install

it should install from that point.
