hello
i do not know if this question has been asked before so please bare with me.
you see i recently did the psone disc exploit on my ps2 and added a hard drive
although i had a choice of a couple of hard drives laying around my house the only one that fitted my ps2 was a seagate 300gb hard drive ( the other extra ones were 20gb, and a 10gb)The problem that i have been running is that my hard drive gets INCREDIBLY hot after i have been playing a game off the hd for like 40 mins. And it gets to the point where i almost can not touch it because it is so hot. as far as i know the hard drive is 300gb, 7200rpm and has a 16mb buffer. My questions is if this is normal with Playstation 2's and if i am killing my hard drive by doing this. Also it would be nice if anyone could share a fix if there is any for this problem. thanks in advance

I've got the same problem with my 120GB Maxtor HDD, i can cook egs on it
after some time (but it still works fine).
The problem might be, that there is no big air circulation inside the HDD slot of the PS2.
If there would be an extension cable to connect the Network Adapter outside of the PS2,
the HDD would get a better cooling.
If you use a smaller HDD with maybe 80GB it wouldn't get that hot
(a friend of mine has one and the temperature is ok).

no it's not normal if it's get so hot u can't touch the surface. in fact, i'm surprised it still works.
u will need to add a cooling fan in there -- seach the forum on how-to.

My two HDDs in my PC get hot to up about 54C, which is too hot to touch and they've been going for several months now. I don't think you can do much about HDD heat unless you spend some money on a good cooler for it.

The HDD shouldnt get too hot to touch thru normal usage (including in the ps2)
Theres obviously something wrong with the drive itself or your ps2 vents are blocked by stuff around it. get a small fan to blow air over the console & see if it still gets to hot to touch. If it cools it, then go buy a fan made for the hdd. (yes they have them)
If it dont cool it at all, id say backup all your games & files now!!!

hi guys thanks for the reply's so far
i have been doing a search for a cooler and i found usb cooler that goes in the front vents of the ps2. do you guys think that it may help?
also i did some searching but i have not encountered a lot of useful topics on cooling the hard drive on a ps2
if worse comes to worse i guess i will go to my local electronics shop and buys some mini fans and power them with an external power supply.
although i still have some question if i would have go through with this.
what fan position is better for cooling? is it better if its blowing air in or sucking the hot air out?
any responses would be tremendously appreciated
also i do have to add that my house is located in southern california it is summer here right now and there is no air conditioner in my room... so do you guys think that even if this is the case would fans help?
thanks

hey guys i fixed the problem i went to my local electronics store bought a usb cable, got a pair of "twin five volt fans" mounted them on top of the exaust vents of where the hard drive goes, peeled the usb cable and then made the fans feed off the 5v of the usb ports. the 2 fans have cooled the hd barbarically! i plan on adding 2 more and using the seconde usb port (there is a little space that thge 2 fans didnt cover im going to add one of another set of the twin fans that i plan buying tommorrow and will add the last remaining fan to blow air inside where the power supply is, if the hard drive remains this nice i think that another fan would just cool it more. im happy, if my friend lets me borrow his camera i will provide pics (it does not look pretty but it sure works
)
oh by the way this fix only costed me 6 bucks! the second set that i am going to buy will cost me the same
but if you just want to cool it to a reasonable level this fix only costs 6 bucks!

Im guessing this would help in cooling down the rest of the ps2:

This happened once, and only once to me. During Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks, a friend and i were playing and the game actually froze during the last fight sequences. We then thought about it though, and figured out that the carpet was making the PS2 (and hard drive) ungodly hot. =(
My advice? If you have a PS2 stand, have the PS2 standing vertically. That way lots of airflow gets to the hard drive area.

I have drilled holes in the case where the HDD is and added a 60mm fan just below the HDD in a custom modded Sony Horizontal stand. A link with details and pics is in my sig. I also have made a fan that mounts in front of the vent. Details on that fan can be found in post #31 on the thread linked in JNABK's post.
