HDLoader - loading backups to HDD (with modchip)
HDLoader - loading backups to HDD (with modchip) –
I'm pretty sure that I had read some place that you couldn't use HDLoader to load a backup of a game (dvd-r) to the HDD, but the first game I had tried I was able to load it onto the HDD (v7 w/ Duochip) and the game played flawlessly (GTA: San Andreas).
I've since put a bigger HDD into the PS2 and just went to load that game back onto the bigger HDD, but it kept coming up 'Not A Valid PS2 Disc' - or whatever that error says.
I was just wondering if anyone knows how the heck I was able to load that backup onto the HDD the first time?
have you enabled the right mode on your modchip? or does it autodetect?
I have a DUO chip and have experienced a similar problem. As far as I can tell, copying backups to the hard drive using HDLoader and the MC exploit is not possible because the DUO chip must be in either PS1 or "disabled" mode to detect the trigger disc. In either of these modes, PS2 backup discs cannot be detected. However, booting HDLoader from a disc should allow backups to be copied because the DUO can then boot in PS2 mode.
yup,... I totally agree with you daugwok. But the thing that has me puzzled is that I somehow managed to copy a backup to the HDD the first time I tried HDLoader out. I've been messing around with it some more, but haven't been able to figure it out.
Did you use HDLoader with the MC exploit or from a disc?
If you copied a backup while using the MC exploit, I don't know how you did it. My solution was to create and use an HDLoader disc for installing backups. However, I have usually used WinHiiip and HDL_Dump to install games, so I haven't used that disc much. Good luck.
hmm,... that's a good idea. Because I would be able to boot the disc in 'PS2 mode' with the modchip.
But I have no idea how I managed to copy the game onto the HDD before. Oh well, I'll give the HDLoader disc a try. I've started to use HDL_Dump, but man that is EXTREMELY slow. So if worse comes to worse, I'll use that and just let it copy the games over to the HDD overnight.
*EDIT* - I did a little more searching and found that I did infact have a copy of HDLoader on disc. So I'm guessing that I did originally use this to backup that dvd-r to the HDD. I just popped it into my PS2 and I'm currently loading that dvd-r onto the HDD right now.
Thanks again for the help!

Sorry,... one other thing. The version I have on disc isn't patched with all the goodies - but the one that I'll be running from the MC is patched.
If I copy the backup to the HDD with the disc and then run HDLoader from the MC and play the game, will the games be patched - or does the patching take place during installation?
Since I only use the disc to install games, the only patch it needs to have is 48-bit LBA support (since my hard drive is 200GB). The patch does not alter the games installed by HDloader in any way, but merely allows HDloader to write and access data beyond the 120GB barrier. No other patch I know of should have any bearing on game installation.
