I know this must sound like a newbie question. And if you see my post count you'll probably think i'm a newb, so I'll just have to proof you wrong.

Ok, what's the thing... I have here a PS2 V9 50004, and I installed a Crystal Chip. Before I installed the Crystal, I installed a LA6508 RII. It all worked fine, but now all of the sudden it doesn't read CD's and only reads DVD's. Let me clearify that, it does read cd's...
but the drive spins like crazy and clicks and makes sounds that, when you hear them, make you turn off your ps2 as fast as you can.

Ok now to the point where I tell you about HDLoader. Ok, the game i'm trying to run is GT4 (woah wait wait before you click reply). I made my own ISO with dvd decrypter. Yes I use HDLoader 0.7c with the CrazyC dvd9 patch.
And I don't even have to say all this, because the HD and GT4 work on my own PS2 V5. Ok back to the V9, it does load HDLoader. I use Bootmanager ofcourse. And HDLoader does say that Gran Turismo 4 is installed on the HD. I press X, the screen goes black... that's it.

What can it be? Does the CD clicking have anything to do with HDloader not running games? Is it the drive? Cause I used another harddisk which also worked in my V5, but does the exact same thing in the V9.

Does any other installed game run? Was the HDLoader patched with /N (no disk seek)?

Thank you for your reply Zer0-X, I just checked.. Yes, the HDLoader is patched with "no disk seek". I downloaded it off ES (not sure if i'm allowed to say it out loud). I'm installing NFL Street as we speak, to see if it will run.

Ok I installed NFL Street... And it runs! So I decided to try GT4 again... and it runs!?! Could someone explain what happened?

Maybe your PS2 had a bad day. I had some clicking in my PS2 before. I cleaned the lens and it stopped clicking.
My mom once told me that video games are like drugs.
I was not really sure what she meant by that.
I don't think anybody could smoke PS2 and get high off it.

Well I did some tests... It's really strange, the games on the HD don't run.. unless I install a new game to the HD.

I tried today, first the games on the harddrive (NFL Street and GT4) didn't run.
So I tried to install another game, it said the disk was full, so I decided to try and play one of the games... and voila it ran!!

So whenever I want to play a game off of the HD, I have to "install" a game that doesn't fit on the disk, before I can play a game that's already installed. Isn't that weird?

And I'm going to clean the lense, so I hope that'll fix the clicking and not reading thing. I'm going to use the van Drunen method to clean it. Hope that'll work.

Does HDLoader have known compatibility issues with the V9? Or is it something i messed up?

There is one known compatibility problem. The /S patch (Stop Disc) can be used in patching HDL for older systems even when that copy of HDL is intended for use with an empty disc tray. So those users can use the very same ELF file for booting with disc in tray as they use for booting with empty tray.

Users of v9 and later PS2 can NOT do that. The /S patch can ONLY be used for an HDL ELF that will boot with a disc in tray. Otherwise it will seem to work, but fail to launch games. It sounds to me as if that could be your problem, as it does work if you put a disc in the tray to install it.

If you try you'll probably find that you don't have to attempt installing anything. Just having a readable PS2 disc in the tray is enough... (Or using a copy of HDL patched without the /S patch.)

    Btw:
I think I have posted variants of this reply several dozen times now.

The only reason I have any empathy left on this subject is that I am one of those who originally suffered this problem before it was known, and my near-death PS2 laser can't even identify a PS2 DVD anymore... A properly patched HDL is the ONLY way for me to run any of my PS2 games bought as DVD.

    Best regards: dlanor

Thank you dlanor, I'll check it out today.. I have been looking on the forum, but I seriously couldn't find anything about this. Maybe I didn't look hard enough. For the ELF, i'll see if I can patch it without /S
