when you first install hdloader on your hdd itll take up some space when fortmatting it but i believe the orignal hdloader wont read it if the hdd is over 128gb or somewhere around there. then youll need another type of hdloader thats 48 bit thatll read higher hdd's. and game size can be shrunken on computer so if you install the games from the ps2 it wont shrink the game. Most games will be around 3.8 gbs.

I don't think HDL calculates free fragmented space, which you can use if you install games with WinHIIP... So you might have more free space than what HDL is showing you, but to use it you have to install games with WinHIIP.

when you uninstall games, does it fully delete the installed game's hd space? you know if you uninstall a 3gb game then you still gain 3gb free?

should work like a normal hdd i mean its not like it has to do through alot to just delete an iso. It sohuld just free up the space the one thing took up.

It is accurate, and I believe it reports fragmented space as well. But it's like snake3 said, the discrepency is from how the manufacturer define 1MB (megabyte) and the real definition of 1MB. They say 1MB is 1000bytes but it should be 1024bytes. So using his example, 300GB to the manufacturer is 300,000,000bytes. But if you use 1024 bytes, it turns out to be 286GB. Also partitioning takes up space as well.

when you first get a hdd it is in RAW format. once it is formatted it takes up space, as for the information. but yea the label is correct, just in raw

I loaded a 20 gb maxtor. It reports size is 19 gb but free space is 16 gb. I think that is way too much space lost due to the above explanation. 20gb = 19 gb acceptable not 20 = 16. Wonder what happned to the 3 gb.
