There is a huge difference, but not so much in the type or structures of the partitions.

The difference lies in how the ToxicOS-specific format 'pretends' that a large disc only has 128 GB, and primarily allocates the space beyond the first 128 GB for its own HDL-type game partitions.

This is intended to reserve the space below 128 GB for use ONLY by old-fashioned HDD drivers (ala Sony) as needed for original PS2 Linux and some other stuff (Sony-style HDD games as used primarily in Japan etc). Such things will then keep to the first 128 GB (as their drivers can't use anything else).

This may sound good on paper, but in practice it is a disaster resulting in drive corruption when you also start using tools with modern drivers that expect normal space allocation for large HDDs.

I realize that this is somewhat off-topic, but is HDLoader superior to ToxicOS?

Not exactly, like amp2006 already said.

ToxicOS is a continuation of the HDLoader project, by the same author (Sjeep) who created the original HDLoader program, and it has several new improvements that make some games work which have problems even with the best patched HDLoader versions.

But the HDLoader patches were developed by very skilled programmers to counter various problems that games had, some of which Sjeep never did solve well for ToxicOS.

So both the patched HDLoader and ToxicOS should be seen as independent improvements on original HDLoader, both having some advantages over the other. Since they can use the same disc format (avoiding the ToxicOS-specific method even in ToxicOS) there is nothing to stop those of us who have a DMS4pro from using both programs alternately. And for those who don't have that modchip the choice doesn't exist, since ToxicOS is not available to them.

    Best regards: dlanor
