And I can access the HDD fine through ULaunchELF, which is how I know that HDL put settings onto the HDD.
I've tried all the jumper settings...same thing every time.

which version of PS2 do you have ?
and if its your own HDL ( Made with skins and patches etc ) which patches you applied ?
and does it freeze when there is a disk in the tray ?
if you have v9 check this in HDL_Patch_Gui under Core Patches
Stops HDLoader from seeking disc while loading to prevent V9 from freezing during the splash screen.
PS2 Version: 7
HDL Version: 8.c from SKSApps, no patches or addons
I haven't tried it yet with a disc in the tray. Will it progress to the game menu if there is a disc in the tray?
so you are launching HDL via uLaunchELF right ?
try another HDL 0.8c
I have tried launching it from ULaunchELF and also from FCMB Configurator, it seems to do the same thing in both cases.
I don't know any other sources for PS2 apps besides SKSApps...I'll try searching around.
EDIT : Okay I found one here on the forums... "Do you want a HDLoader 0.8b that has the right patches for users who are booting from FreeVast without a disc in the drive?"
It says it's 8c though in the filename... So I'll give it a try.
No luck with the alternate HDL, same thing happens, though granted I haven't yet tried it with every possible combination of jumper settings...
If LaunchELF can access my HD, does that mean that my jumper settings should be good?
That should be the case, as no PS2 software can access the HDD unless it has been properly jumpered to 'Master'.
So if uLaunchELF can show a partition list, and content of normal PFS partitions, then HDLoader should also be able to access the HDD (when properly patched to work right).

ULaunch isn't showing any partitions, only a folder called "HDLoader Settings."
If it makes any difference, I used WinHIIP for formatting, at 48 bits... My drive is 500GB (465GB after the format).
The top level 'root' directory of hdd0: in the uLE FileBrowser does not contain folders. All the names you see in that list are in fact separate partitions. Browsing 'inside' one of those names will bring you to the real root directory of the selected partition. On a properly formatted PS2 HDD you should have some other partitions visible too, beside the one named "HDLoader Settings"
That list of partitions displayed by the FileBrowser is not complete though, as it would make no sense to include partitions that would crash the browser on attempts to browse them, as they contain incompatible application-specific custom filesystems. To see the complete list of partitions you need to run the subprogram "Misc/HddManager" of uLE. The list it displays includes every partition on the HDD, including one partition for each game installed for HDLoader. (With a PS2 it is quite normal to have dozens or even hundreds of partitions, unlike the case of a PC.)
Best regards: dlanor
I can't find the option to run the subprogram that you refer to.
There are no other folders visible when browsing to the HDD. I formatted including every kind of partition that the guides at my disposal said that I needed, and not creating those that it said were unnecessary.
