i happen to have one of those 7200.11 seagate barracuda drives, that are supposed to be affected by a grave firmware bug - ( http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/cr...p?DocId=207931 ) .
recently i've noticed that when i plug my 250gb 7200.11 drive to pc - the bios has a hard time identifying it. actually during last 4-5 weeks i never succeeded getting it to work in my pc. (it used to work fine earlier, though).
i already tried changing jumpers, ide tape, power connectors, plugging the drive on a separate ide port (as a master with no slave configuration). nothing works.
ps2 however, has no problems working with the drive. it runs flawlessly with no data losses, corruptions, lockups or strange noises.
does anyone have a clue what might be so different about how ps2 handles the hdd? maybe my pc's psu is going bad?

quite possible that the ps2 ignores certain checks of the hdd firmware and just sends generic instructions for operation that all makes and models would use where the pc has to identify if it even farted. that's the only logical thing I can think of that makes sense.

I would be having a very close look at the plug and socket on the drive and your PC, It is very possible that the IDE ports on your PC are on the off, I've had that happen to me on a couple of Mobos, or it just could be the drive is on it's way out. Whatever it is I would be backing up what you have on your drive and investigate other ways of connecting to the PC, I use the NA with hdld_svr.elf in conjunction with hdldumpguiv14.exe on the PC and a network cable.

yeah I've got a Hitachi Deskstar that's like 5 years old and it wouldn't boot my Windows OS . So, I tossed it in my ps2 as a data drive. Works good! It can boot HDL partitions!!! Although it loads most of the time, but if i try and play a little further into my games it crashes. When i transfer games to my ps2 via Hdld_svr and hdldump- 0.8.3 I don't get errors while transfering the games. It's only when I play certain games it locks up. And for those games, the transfer process didn't report an error during transfer. I think that the head is marginal or that there are some dead sectors on it. But I'm still overall happy.

Have you tried Seatools from the seagate website, it can identify drives at a low level and repair bad sectors and recognition errors..
Worth a try for a drive thats probably on the way out, even if it does work on the PS2..
