HDD and Softmod help –
As you can see this is my first post, I apologise I am asking for help, but if anyone can kindly point me in the right direction it will help me immensely.
I have a PS2 Phat unmodded. I have just bought 320GB IDE Maxtor HD and HDD/Network Addon. My intention is to set this up so I can install all the games I have acquired (originals) directly on the HD.
Where do I start in terms of modding this PS2 to be able to do this. I've read somewhere I need a memory card with McBoot on it? Is that all I need or do I have to softmod the PS2 first? Do I need to install any hardware mod chips? The last time I was involved in modding/ playing back ups was many years ago when I used to used the disc swap trick with action replay!
I have spare 8gb memory card, do I need to transfer the McBoot files with HDD loader onto this? (if so how do I achieve this) or will I need to buy one of the many listed on ebay?
I'm sure there are many tutorials but the ones I have seen are all varied and has made it more confusing.
Can you recommend a tutorial I can follow to achieve the above please?
I am familiar with carrying out this type of mod as I have done a couple of softmodded/ hd upgrades to my xbox's. I'm just a little out of touch with the PS2!
Any help will be appreciated
This is the video I used to softmod mine:
(Since I can't post links, look up the following on youtube
How to SoftMod your ps2 for Free!!! Part 1 - Hardware
Maybe it will work for you.
Yes, you will need an official memory card made by Sony, with 8MB free.
Also, you will need a USB flash drive stick to move the files, and you will need a copy of 007: Agent Under Fire for the exploit.
And the last thing you need is some blank CD-R's. I recommend verbatim.
If I buy a memory card with McBoot 1.8 already installed via ebay do I still need to softmod it with Agent Under Fire?
You shouldn't have to, although I would take the time to take caution to think if you're wasting money or not.

Rather than buy a FMCB mc from ebay, you could send your mc to a volunteer on this site and have it installed for free, (not exactly free, you need to pay postage both ways).
If you can do the swap trick with swap magic disks, you can install FMCB yourself.
Download the uLE (unofficial Launch ELF) ISO file. Burn to a disk. Run this disk with swap magic. Download FMCB noobie package and put it on a USB, plug USB into ps2. Using uLE's browser, go to mass, (that's your USB), find FREE_MCBOOT.ELF and run it. Follow the directions to install on your mc. That's all there is to it.
