  1. #1 HDD Renders Direct-Boot modchip useless
    Japots Guest
Recently bought a new PS2, scph-5000 model, modded it with a direct boot mod chip and so far, its been playing games my old v4 jap ps2 couldnt read anymore.

Also recently, i bought the official HDD to play FFXI online. now here comes the problem. whenever the hdd is plugged into the expansion bay, my ps2 gets stubborn. it wont play ANY cds or dvds (mostly backups, but it sometimes refuses to read originals) of course, this is remedied by merely unpluggin the hdd, but im thinking this might cause a bit of damage in the long run with the constant insert/pull of the hdd.

im thinking the modchip is causing some sort of incompatibility with the hdd, because even when theres no disc inside the disctray, the ps2 wont even reach the browser menu (although i found having the disc tray open also remedies this, but then again, long term damage >__>).

i'm wondering if anyone has ever encountered this problem before and if theres a fix to it, because i just want to keep the damned thing plugged and forget about it.

p.s. eheh, this problem also makes me iffy on actually buying an hdloader/advance even tho my wallet tells me i dont need it

edit: holy crap, i've been a member since oct of 2002 and have only posted twice? this is an outrage!

lol.... if u bought the OFFICIAL hdd it'll upgrade the bios of the ps2 (i tihnk) so all the coding is diff and changed >_< that's y the modchip will freeze

unless u got those expensive newer mods (dsm3!) u hafta get a 3rdparty hdd and patch games so it'll regonize it as an officail hdd ^_^.. and u can install hdloader lol

if ya still want to play backups u hafta d/c the hdd.. or install an exploit and make a home made fliptop or slideward lol ^_^..

sure it can be, the updates are on either the memory card, like in the case of the DVD Player v2 that installs of the cd that comes with the sony dvd remote, or utilties disc for SCPH-10000, or in this case, to the HDD, the new browser installed goes with the HDD and works on any other same region ps2 you happen to stick it in, done this, found out accidently. The new bios adds an upgraded browser that now will see the hdd and show it, as well as what's on it, new functions are "X" on icon does nothing, "/\" on the icon and get a new more function options menu with copy/delete and such. worthless, dont need it, and if you ditch the original Sony HDD, without all that, or just somehow DELETE all the stuff that the HDD utilities disc installed on the orginal sony hdd, for you, your conflict should vanish, and if you use any other than sony hdd, same, your chip will only add the ability to rip backups to the hdd instead of originals only, as long as you boot the loader from a ps2 disc, not from an exploit in psx mode of the chip. Done this on version 8 with magic 3.1, non-sony hdd, proven.

with the xbox, doesn't it boot from the HD so you just overwrite files there?
Not sure, since I dont own an xbox, and have just minimally studied up on hacking it.

yeah, and using a non sony that the software rejects, anyway, that'll do it too, just erase somehow, the shit that the hdd utilities disc installed...loose the HDD in the browser, cure the modchip.
