sometimes...just sometimes when I'm playing a game my hdd just freezes...it did that in gta sa and I read some ppl were having problems...and now it did it again when playing star ocean..while going to the char menu screen..it just gave me a blackscreen while music was still playing in the background. I have a 120 gig maxtor 7200 rpms with hdd loader patched to 48bit and all other patches applied..could that be the problem maybe..or could it be that the drive itself is overheating? I reset it after it froze and played fine for 5 hours afterwards...just curious if others have had this problem.

every blue moon or so I'll get a freeze up, but this might be something like once every 25hrs of gameplay ... nothing major, bound to run into an error here or there. As for if its the hdd or coding in HDL, I'd most likely say it would have to be just a hdd glitch, as the HDL code is out of memory once the game starts

    RyDaWg2k1:
You are mistaken about the HDL code being completely removed.

AFAIK HDL makes no attempt to remove/hide itself unless you use mode 3, and even then a lot of its IOP code must remain in memory, for the redirection of CD-HDD access to function properly. In fact those CD-HDD drivers will have a major impact on game timing, which can also be controlled (partly) by using mode 1.

I agree that hardware timing also matters a lot, and can cause lockup of games. This has happened to me on several occasions when I've been away from the PS2 for some reason and then return to continue playing. The HDD will then need to spinup again, and at that point many games will freeze...

Even so, that too must be considered a shortcoming of HDL, as it should be possible for a better driver to handle spinup and other hardware behaviour, in a way more transparent to the game software, making it work independently of the physical drive limitations. But of course, things being as they are with HDL 'development', these are limitations we'll have to accept for now.

    Best regards: dlanor
