HDD heat while inside PS2

Hi guys, I haven't seen a thread dedicated to this so I thought I'd start one. First I'd like to say that this forum is great, and it has helped me install the HDD and apps and such. Salute to all the guys who have released patches as well as apps. You rock :headbang:

I've been lurking here for a week or two and I got my HDD to work fine. I work with my computer hardware a lot, just as many of you do, and one thing I've tried to do throughout the years is to keep my system cool. The way I have my PC set up, my HDDs are only warm to the touch, they're never hot. Tonight, I played some games off the HDD, and then I took it out to use WinHIIP. The drive was hot.

I know there isn't much you can do about it except mounting it externally with some modication, but I'm just wondering what you guys think about this issue. My drive is a Seagate 160GB 7200RPM. Heat definitely shortens life, but how many of you are concerned? How long have you had your drive, any problems? Thoughts?

perhaps its because you're running a 7200rpm drive..

my seagate 5400rpm 40gb drive runs hot as well im goin to mount it externally in an inclosure and add a fan i know my pc Hdd never get anywhere near as hot as the air flow is excellent in my pc

i have a maxtor 80gig 7200 and it barely gets warm... i've touched it after playing onimusha3 and r&c2 for one seperate days for about 5 hrs each.

I'm getting a seagate 200 gb 7200 rpm.... not too worried though. My ps2 will be next to my window and it gets pretty damn windy and cold in my dorm room with the window open, so my ps2 should be alright. Either that or I'll just get a fan and use it to cool the ps2 as well as circulate air throughout the room!

my hard disks get so much hotter in my pc than they do in my ps2.

i have a moxtor 60gig 7200 rpm and got only one time hot in the begining

yeah.... back in the day... when I was in high schools.... the old 33 1/3 RPM drives never got hot.... (33 1/3)... ha!

yeah noticed... you have a Seagate? Take that rubber boot off of it... that is a major no no.... It did come with the boot on it.. the black rubber pad that raps around it... take that off....... I had to remove the one from my PC drive.... it holds in the heat.

And yeah I too plan on making a few mods to my PS2 to help with the heat... and add a second drive in a swap bay....

not to worry, I shouldn't think it will matter with the over heating as the Ps2 was made to fit a hdd, even if it is 5400 or 7200 its still the same, people run pcs all the time always on, using linux and windows, and my pc is on a lot longer than the PS2 and the drives tend to over heat, the cooling in this PC is not much good so the drive over heats alot and it is still woriking fine

Since when did they start putting those rubber SeaShields back on seagates? The only seagate I've seen with one so far is an old 4.3gb (ATA66), and so far I've dealt with 7 other new models... And IMO, the shield on the drives like the Barracuda IV don't impact performance, since the metal top is insulated from the hottest part of the drive (the spindle, which connects to the bottom of the drive case) anyways.

Trust me when I say that the average lifespan of a modern 7200rpm drive [when installed into a ps2] will be much longer than the average lifespan of a ps2.
