you cant play officall online games with non officall ps2 hdd without the game being patched with some games that is impossiple and it will have to be formated first

hd advance dose not need a patch and can format most drives itsself

That's because you didn't RTFM. The manual tells you you have to reinstall PlayOnline Viewer before you can use it. Applications that are bootable from the HDD without a disc are keyed to the PS2 that installs them. Since PlayOnline Viewer was preinstalled at Sony, it's keyed to the PS2 at their facility, and you have to reinstall it to rekey it to your system. It will work properly after that.

so the discs that came with the HDD package from the store should have the necessary stuff to re-install?

Yes, but you only need to run the PlayOnline Viewer disc. FFXI and Tetra Master aren't keyed to a specific PS2, since they don't boot directly from the HDD. They boot through PlayOnline Viewer. Only PlayOnline Viewer needs to be reinstalled.

If we had PSBBN in the US, you would have to reformat the entire HDD to move it to a new system and be able to use it, since PSBBN falls into the category of a bootable program. HDD Utility Disc isn't as tough to deal with in that regard.
