    Hello all

    I bought a few days ago a network adapter + 80gig maxtor HDD for my V7 PS2.
Very happy with it, works fine.

One thing though, when the HDD turns on, the PS2 fan blows stronger (or maybe it is a second fan, I don't know) and one of these is causing vibrations in my PS2 producing an extremely annoying low humming noise.

Is it normal? Does it happen to some of you too?

I've considered putting the PS2 on a piece of foam to absorb the vibrations. Are there any other solutions?

    Thank you in advance

(Great forum by the way, I've learned a lot by lurking here :P).

The fan getting louder is normal because with a HDD inside the PS2, the PS2 gets warmer than usual and needs more airflow.

Have you tightened the 2 screws on the network adapter?

    Thank you for answering

Yup, I did tighten those screws (maybe it wasn't enough or too much).

I'm wondering if it's the fan or the HDD that causes those vibrations and what I could do to stop them... :/

what you could try to do is put the ps2 on a chair, to see if it stops, my pc does the same thing unless i have it completely by itsself. otherwise, my fan really speeds on my ps2, but only when its really hot in my house. Is your hdd thinner , i have seen segates that are smaller than 2 inches, but dont know about maxtors. What i am goin to do is rig some heatsinks so my hdd wont rattle. anyway i hope this helps, otherwise if the hdd rattles to much, just get some small peices from an erector set and use those. it helped me a little.

Didn't try putting it on a chair but if I lift the front part up, the vibration stops.
I tried blocking the fan but the noise goes on, so it's the HDD.
It's the same size as others

Thank you for your advices but what do you mean by "rig heatsinks"? How will you place those? And what is an erector?

I have that problem too, tried to solve it but the best I could do is put someting under the PS2 to lift one side a bit up and with its weight it's also compressed a little I think and that sometimes helps. I usually use a MC for that and put it under the front right corner of my PS2. I think you can also try to put a heavy dictionnary or smth on it, my PC shuts up when I do that.

How about using the PS2 in vertical position? Maybe that will help.

adelgary -> Yeah, it should work but I don't have the space to do that

daa57150 -> Ha tiens, un fr
I did try putting some things underneath but I guess a MC would be a good solution.

Do you think vibrations are bad for the system?
Ah well, even if they were, I wouldn't have any other choice

A have 3 MC so one is always lying there anyway, but I think anything a bit small can do the job, just try with what you find...

I think it's not so good but hey, I have a HDD in my PS2 since it is possible (almost 2 years I think), and I play often and during long times (up to 4h a day) and my PS2 is still going well...

mine makes lots of noise, but that is mostly due to the case design.

the slots used for air (in the front,) also make a nice slot for listening to your HDD through. i can tell it is all HDD because it doesn't start until i load an app from the Hd, then all you can hear is the disk spin up and start reading sectors.

your computer's case is alot better at sound control, especially if it is made out of metal.
