HDD Browser and getting started help. –
03-03-2005,04:36 PM
Sup all,
My head is spinning after so much reading around for tutorials, how tos or any info i can find.
Anyways. allow me to explain where im at so far.
Ive just recieved my Matrix Infinity PS2 (v39001 V7 i think) and already visited the infinitymod.com (i assume thats their homepage) site and updated to the latest firmware (INFINITY FIRMWARE V1.39).
Recieved it with HDAdvance 2 but will be getting the latest HDLoader soon cus i hear its better and more widely used.
As a test ive installed 2 games on the HDD via HDLdump to the PS2 HDD using usb a hard drive encloser case.
First was installing Samurai Shodown 1 & 2 PSX import which will not boot at all (black screen).
Then i tried Tenchu Wrath Of Heaven which works perfectly.
Now im wondering why is it that i cant see my Maxtor 200GB HDD in the PS2 browser but only in the loader?
I went into the MI configuration menu and seen that ATAD auto patch was switch to ON then hit rest, then back to the browser which still didnt show the HDD.
I read further and believe i may need a HDD utility disk or just the PS2MNU-K48BIT.ELF patch but every ELF program i find has just ELF files in it.
I dunno how to use them and am very lost. Sorry its gone over my head man.
I dunno how i can view my HDD in the PS2 browser or dunno how to use a ELF file either.
Could someone please help or give me a hint on where i can learn or find out about this stuff?
Im down to my last eye.
PS
Sorry if this will be locked as a useless thread.

- HD Advance and HD Loader are not really that different; HD Advance haves a different skin and few patches applied, which are freely available on this forums;
- Playstation games does NOT work with HD Loader; only SOME Playstation 2 games does;
- AFAIK ('cause I live in Europe and $ony screwed us really bad), in order to "see" your HDD in PS2 browser you should install updated browser software first (available with FF XI), and to have an original $ony HDD, or to have a mod with ATAD auto-patch;
- since you have a mod you could try searching about how to make a bootable CD using cdgenps2.

Thanks for the reply.
Ive installed the utility disk 1.10 that came with FFXI and that helped but it only shows 130GB capacity and now im trying to install the v1.2 with nero that fixes that problem but dunno how to install it. I tried making an image from the icon.bin but it comes out corrupt.
Since i have a ps2 with matrix infinity i dunno why the ATAD auto-patch feature didnt enable detection of the 200GB HDD.
Ill try making another bootable of v1.2 with cdgenps2 and see if that works.
Next project after this will be if or how i can run HDLoader/HDAdvace from a memory card because if my lens fails on me again then how will i be able to use my ps2 at all?.

I believe you can boot HDL from the memory card and such using the Matrix Infinity? I'm not too sure about this, if it would work like d_m_s. There are a few threads if I recall that talk about this, that is they are from late 2004 or so time. As for your other problem with HDD showing, sorry can't help you there. I haven't tried to have my PS2 HDD show up in the browser.
My laser is pretty much dying out on me (Clicking and a few read errors when trying to play backups. Also some games don't boot, etc). I still use the memory exploit with PSX trigger disk, works fine. But with a MI or d_m_s I believe you can trigger HDL and such from their browsers or menus and such. Once again try search for it, sorry I can't help much.
I'm just curious about your comment about a new HDL? There's a new one coming out? From what I recall, HDL was shut down awhile ago. Then that whole ordeal occurred with people selling out, G, people fighting, etc. HDA continued, just reproducing copies of somewhat altered HDL with patches and a new skin (Not talking about USB Loader....which I think might be vaporware). However AFAIK I thought the future production of HDL was dead......(minus patches and such which seemed to have stopped)

importtuner, the MC HDL almost worked for me i made the CD, it installed but no HDL menu poped out after install or after reboot.
Seems to me the HDL MC expliot is useless because i thought you could of use just the MC with no disk.
I thought the purpose for the MC exploit was not to use a boot disk and just boot from the MC.
Maybe i just read it incorrectly or something.
New HDL? Dunno nuthing about that, i just see many different types of HDL floating around.

I dont know how to use or install a hdl elf on the HDD.
BTW, the HDD Utility v1.2 by TheDecline
http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27652 (PS2 HDD Utility by TheDecline)
seems very weird. The icon.bin has nuthing in it and the PS2 HDD Utility.exe act like HDLdump. Maybe im confusing it for a HDD GB patch.

You are partially right. The purpose of the MC exploit is to be able to run HDL from the memory card. The problem is though, for V7 and below PS2s a PSX trigger disk is needed. The PSX is read briefly and the disc motor shuts off (Assuming you patched HDL properly). HDL is booted from the MC, it's just that the PSX disk is used to initiate the PSX driver and create a buffer overflow (or something of the sort, I completely forgot the technical aspect of this portion). The PSX is then not used for the rest of the HDL usage. The PSX disk is a regular PSX game, not a burned one or anything. So it should keep the laser from wearing out quickly as opposed to burned media. Also the laser stops reading the disk after HDL starts to boot up.
Modchips with BIOS and such are able to trigger HDL through the modchips themselves. I believe that Matrix Infinity and D_M_S is able to do this. You don't need a disk, it boots from the BIOS menu or something. I'm not entirely sure like I said, but this should help.
You could also try some OS for the PS2, but I have no expertise or experience in that field, I never really had to much of an interest since they were still in the early stages when I started to lose focus on the ps2 HDD scene.
Hope this helps. If you have anymore questions, just ask. That's what forums are mainly for.... I think.

Scratch that, not too sure now. haha lemme check some more when I have time.
I do know you can boot without a disk via DMS or Infinity chips.
