I installed my HDCombo, but it isn't working I've re-checked all my solder points and everything looks fine. HDLoader isn't detecting a HDD which means my HDCombo isn't working OR my HDD is compatible. A few very similar models of HDD are known to work though.

My HDCombo kit arrived missing quite a few parts. The screw cover stickers, the cable/plug for the power adapter, case sticker and the Ground cable that gets screwed down under the DVD-ROM drive and plugged into a plastic connector. All of the other items were trivial except for the Ground Wire. Do you think the lack of it being installed is preventing it from working? I have the ground points soldered at all the points on the ribbon cable. I'm VERY frustrated. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to lend me.

well i don't know too much about soldering but if everything correct on your setup .

then it must be the HDL that you are using is not patched for v12/13 .

Thanks for responding. I'm using HDLoader .8c, you mean I need a patched version for my v13? Hmm

    Hey SP120K.

I'm sorry I didn't reply to your profile message earlier.
I know it's hard to find, but here is the wiring diagram.

I had a hell of a time finding it because the original one in hdcombo.com was gone. Luckily, someone kept a copy elsewhere. Hope it helps.

Edit: DAMMIT!!! Wrong link. *keeps searching*
Found a second one, but it's missing a bit of stuff. I guess the originals may be lost forever. Though I was sure I'd seen it last month.

FINA****INGLY!!! Right one with full diagram.

As Amp said, it could be your version of HDL that is doing it. Have you checked to make sure your jumper settings are correct? If the jumper settings are wrong, it will not detect the HDD. I think it's supposed to be set to Master.

Also, the version I use is 0.7c with v12 patch. The only difference between 0.7c and 0.8c is the God of War 2 fix, I think. That game so far works fine on OPL, though I've only tested a couple of levels. 0.8c that came with the Noobie package keeps asking me to re-format my HDD, so I know it's got some issue with my system.

    I think not.

To my knowledge the "God of War 2" fix is the difference between v0.8b and v0.8c.
Since I don't care about that game I've stayed with v0.8b myself, but v0.7c should also be missing other stuff, so you really should upgrade, naturally by patching it yourself to ensure you get all you need.

And that includes not only the important v12 patch, but also the skin choice, which is what determines the compression ratio of the final elf. The difference can be huge as I have one of 1381KB (fancy FFX graphics) and another of only 158KB (simple one-colour backgrounds), though both are identically patched v0.8b versions.

Here is a readme excerpt from hdlpatch release v0.8b, showing what you are missing:

    HDLPatch 0.7c (2005-05-27)
I cut the list off at the version you have, since you already know how that works.
But all the changes above it are things that you missed out on in using that older version.
(Well over a year older in fact, at a time when hdlpatch development was still a big thing.)

If you have any intention of ever using HDL again, you should do so with a version upgraded at least to v0.8b. (Like I said, v0.8c is just for a single game I don't care about.)

That game so far works fine on OPL, though I've only tested a couple of levels.
There is no reason for it not to work with OPL.

0.8c that came with the Noobie package keeps asking me to re-format my HDD, so I know it's got some issue with my system.
This simply means that the v12 fix is either missing or somehow bugged. I can't really tell the difference between those cases as I have no v12 or v13 console to test them with. And I don't know if the v0.8c fix could break the v12 patch somehow.

But a properly patched HDL v0.8b should definitely work for you, at least as well as your old v0.7c did (provided you remember the v12 patch of course).

    Best regards: dlanor

Thanks guys, I've tried HDL Gui patching v.7c and v.8c with v12/13 support and neither are able to see the HDD.

I'm down to a couple final assumptions.

I feel pretty confident my soldering was fine, triple-checked them. I even rigged up a homemade ground wire connector to replace the one I never got shipped with my kit.

I feel my HDD which is a Western Digital WD1600JB may not be working with HDCombo. From what I see this exact drive works fine in fats though.

I am close to just giving up and getting a fat, a guy has 2 to sell me for 40 bucks and they are both with broken lasers. I won't need a laser with HDD, Winhiip, and FMCB. One of them is a V1 and the other is a V4. Might be cool to have an old one.

The V1 is awesome, rock solid but it sucks for giving repairs to it.

The V4 is easier to repair in case it breaks.

Since I know how to fix PS2s I would pick the V1 but then I'd recommend you to get the V4 as it's easier to deal with.

i've been wanting to get a hd combo for my slim. i have a v9 with a fried LA6508 chip, dead laser, and missing ribbon cable for the reset button. the motherboard and case look very nice though. you would just need a ribbon cable for the reset button and you'll be good to go to play games via hdd.

plus, i have a spare PS2 network adapter that you can use with any other IDE hdd but it will need to be modified to work with a western digital drive.

how about i trade you my v9 PS2 and network adapter for your entire hd combo setup? PM me.
