I have a modded xbox right now and i'm planning on getting a Ps2 soon. Can someone explain the differences between getting a modchip and getting hd loader?

a modchip allows you to play backups(then again there's modchips with more functionnality than just that)

hd loader allows you to install games on a ps2 hdd ..if your console is not modded, you need all the Sony stuff.. sony hdd sony network adaptor, sony ps2(lol) and of course an official hd loader cd.. so you can install your original games on the original hdd without any modchip.

on the other hand If you install a modchip, and buy the sony network adaptor.. you can install another hdd of the size you want, and you can find on the net a rather less expensive version of hd loader (read: free).. I don't know if any other modchip does that, but the dms modchip actually allows you to use a bigger hdd just like it was an official one..

You don't need a Sony HDD, Maxtor or Seagate HDD will work just fine without a modchip.

I agree fully with rilhouse... Any hard drive will work (well the ones that are compatable at least).. i have HDloader and my PS2 isnt moded at all... Im also using an old 4MB hard drive out of a Compaq computer... Getting the Maxtor 250Gig drive tomorrow... Sents its only $150 I cant pass that offer up...
But remember Aciddragon not all games work with HDloader... But all games do with a modchip... it just depends if you can burn DVD-R disk or not... If you can and have the money for the disk (and the time to mess with burnen them) just get a modchip...

yeah a modchip + hdloader is a great combo...

I thought you had to have an original ps2 hd in order to use the original hd loader(in a unmodded ps2).. interesting information rilhouse thx!

I'm jumping back on the PS2 bandwagon now too... I've been reading up on hdloader and its ups and downs now for the past couple of days. And I have decided that I will be going down the modchip + hdloader path as well.

Now I only have to figure out whats up and down in the ps2 scene to see where to start off at. I've been reading that theres a hacked version of hd loader floating around that lets you boot off of the memory card given that your modchip supports booting from the mc. Is there any chance that one day we can get hdloader or a similar program to boot directly from the hdd? or is that all going to be mod chip specific?
