HD Loader problems –
10-18-2006,01:10 AM
So my ps2 broke down a couple of months ago and I gave up on trying to fix it. Even bought one on ebay which turned out to be broken. Anyway, I recently decided to crack it open give it another shot and it works nicely now. So I load up hdloader and it asks for a format. I know I still have some games on there so I recover some of them with WinHiip and I also format and add some new games on it. But when I boot it up with hdl it asks for a format again. I let it format and when I restart it, it just asks for another format. Looking at the HD on winhiip shows that the HD isn't formatted(all the games are still there), and is somehow using toxicos instead. Another format with winhiip just gives the same problem when I load up hdloader. I've tried google searching and etc and I can't find an answer to my problem. Anybody else run into these kind of problems before?

I'm assuming you had the hard drive jumper set to master when in your PS2, right? Also, when you formatted the drive, what was "Application" set to?

It's on cable select. The ps2 didnt recognize it when i switched it to master. Its formatted in HDL 28-bit (120 gig hd). I even tried formatting it with windows today and reformatting it with hdloader. no dice, still asks to format

I'd say that's your problem right there because it HAS to be set to master as far as I know. If your PS2 can't recognize the drive while set to master, then you have to look at why. When you formatted the drive in your PC, was it setup as a slave drive (jumper set to slave)?
EDIT: Maybe formatting it as cable select in WinHIIP is the reason why it's not working set as Master in your PS2?

Also when you format with winhiip, use the full format option, not the quick. 'Full' checks the disc for bad sectors, 'quick' only deletes everything.
The hdd could have bad sectors in the MBR partition.

I don't think it has anything to do with the jumper. It used to be on CS back when it was working. Also, when I put it in the pc it's set on slave.
Did a full format on winhiip, same problem.

I have the same problem.
I have a v12 with a HD Combo installed.
When I use HDAdvance it just keeps telling me that the drive needs to be formated.
Did anyone find a solution to this problem ?

You could also try formatting the drive in Windows first, then format it with WinHIIP. If the drive was just purchased, it probably needs to be properly formatted first, meaning through Windows.
EDIT: This may also fix any problems on a drive which used to work on the PS2 and now doesn't...

Actually its best to use the formatting disc that comes with the HDD, if it comes with one. Maxtor HDDs have Maxtor MaxBlast. Then use winhiip to format it, you can use the "quick format" since the maxtor utility would do the "full format".
