Alright, I finally decided on a 160gb seagate hdd (listed as working http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list). Now my question is about using hdloader 48-bit. I know I can put the elf on my mc since I'm running matrix infinity. My question is, can I make multiple partitions with it? Like can I make two partitions that are 80gb each? Or how does this all work?

HDLoader itself can not make partitions. It can, however, make the whole drive one partition. If you use the DMS HDD format tool, you can make as many partitions as you want but i believe that it has an 8gb limit on partition size.

from the reading I've been doing, the partitions created by the DMS HDD Format Tool must be a factor of 128mb, correct me if I'm wrong

Yeah. The PS2 uses space on the hdd in 128mb sections so say you create a 500mb partition. It will just round up to 512mb.
