Currently all .hack games seem to have issues with loading. You will have to wait and see what will happen.

Hey there. I had put .hack on my hdd (outbreak and quarentine), but hadn't tried them. After reading this, I figured I'd give one a shot, and Outbreak booted fine with Mode 1 enabled. I just tried without any modes enabled, and it still works fine. Played through a random level as well, with no freezing.

What version of the PS2 do you have? That may effect the way the game is being read. For example when I play Xenosaga on the HDD, I need to actually expand it and make into one giant layer ISO. Just dumping the ISO normally after using DVD Decrypter causes problems loading.

I have a version 10 ps2. I also have the official Sony HDD, so that may be a factor as well. I wasn't aware that Xenosaga will work without "flattening" it into 1 layer. Isn't that how dvd9 games need to be done? But that's for another thread I suppose. I'll try .hack//Quarantine tonight to see if that works as well.

Last night I tried .hack Quarantine, and the game froze upon trying to read new mail. I didn't try turning on any compatibility modes, so it may work using one of them. If get bored tonight, I'll run through and try them out to see if it makes a difference.
