  1. #1 getting 5400 rpm 2/ 2mb cache vs. 7200rpm/8mb cache

hi, as the title says, i don't know which one to get.. i'm thinking 120gb from maxtor, but they offer one that is 5400 rpm w/ 2mb cache and another one with 7200rpm/8mb cache.

how much difference in time will there be between the two HD when i install game to the HDD,,, i want to get 5400rpm to minimize the heat buildup in my ps2 but not sure how much slower it would be when i install game using winhiip or other method..

    thanks.

no difference, i don't believe the ps2 can access the hdd fast enough need more than 5400 rpms.

but if you ever plan on sticking the hard drive in your PC, then i'd recommend getting the 7200.

One thing is that the disk with the larger cache won't have to move the heads as much, so it may acually run cooler then the slower disk.

Since the partitions on PS2 should be allocated as one continuous area from the HDD without fragmentation, bigger cache should have a small effect in performance. Still, 7200 rpm drives run a lot hotter than 5400 rpm drives.

5400 rpm Samsung with 8MB would be ideal. The 7200 rpm Maxtor with 8MB I have is like a grill.

i have been using a maxtor 120gb 7200rpm drive since hdloader first became available and haven't had one single problem with it. wrt fragmentation, is usually not a problem, but as most of you know that when removing and putting in new games you will have fragmentation. cuz winhiip only uses all available spots, it doesn't actually reorganize the main and sub partitions together again so that the hdd is set up as contiguous chunk of data.

and yeah it gets a little hot, but not hot enough to melt plastic or any other such thing. just keep in a well ventilated area.

    anyway, there's my 2 cents.
