Your options (similar to snake3 above):
Update to the latest firmware.
Install HDLoader as DEV1. To do this, your copy of HDLoader should be renamed as BOOT.ELF and placed in a folder called BOOT on your memory card:
You can then reset your PS2, hold down R1 on the joypad and boot straight into HDLoader. No need to go anywhere near the Infinity Manager.
Anyway, it might be a good idea to ditch the Matrix Manager for something like LaunchElf. I've done this myself and saved my sanity!
On your memory card should be a folder called MATRIXTEAM. In this folder is a file called MANAGER.ELF which is the Matrix Manager that launches when you boot holding down the triangle button.
If you take an alternative launcher, such as LaunchELF, rename it to MANAGER.ELF and place it in the MATRIXTEAM folder, you will boot into LaunchELF whenver you hold down triangle.
Just be warned, if you have a V9-V11 PS2, later versions of LaunchELF may not work properly and HDLoader will need to be patched.
