A few HDloader questions....

I recently heard about HDloader and have been looking around the net for it.

I found a few sites i can buy it from, but being one short on cash i look on suprnova >_>

I was wondering if i could burn HDLoader to a disc does it have to be a DVD-R or a CD-R and would i need a mod chip to actually run that burned CD of HDloader..

Also can I transfer files over a network connection using winiihp i believe it's called?

You need a modchip, or a swap trick with Cdloader to use burned PS2 CDs. And you can burn it to a CD or a DVD, doesn't matter.

Hi everyone, I've just gotten a new silver PS2 with a hard disk and a copy of FREE HD Loader. I bought this set up on ebay, it's all brand new but I was suprised that the HD Loader software is on an old PS1 game (G Police!) Obviously it must be possible to burn HD loader onto old PS one games, but it seems very strange. Anyway, everything about the set up works fine, except in anticipation of me getting my new toy I was aquiring 'backup' copys of new games to put in my new PS2. I've discovered that HD Loader does not recognise backup copy disks unless the PS2 is modded with a chip. However, I have read it is possible to get these games onto the hard disk by removing the drive and putting it into a PC and then using a piece of software called hd_dump your PC can then 'see' the PS2 partition and copy the backup copy games across. This causes me a minor problem in that firstly I have a Mac and not a PC (although I could put virtual PC and run Windows XP on it) but secondly, my Mac is a laptop and so I couldn't put the PS2 hard disk in it.
This leaves me with another option I've read about, the 'swap-card trick' Iunderstand what needs to be done with this method but dont fancy removing the CD-drive front and shoving a cut up credit card in and forcing the drive tray open. Is it possible to take the top case off the PS2 completely, exposing the cd drive (in the same way a flip top case does?) install my back up games onto the hard disk using HD loader after swapping out a real PS2 games after it stops spinning? and then replace the cover after installing the 12 back up games I have. This would seem less risky to me, doing all the installs in one go, rather than the swap card trick which could damage my PS2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You really should have started your own thread, but being a fellow mac user, i'll help you out ;). The PS1 game is used to boot HDLoader off the memory card. Try taking the mem card out of the Ps2 and see what happens. As for copying backups to the HD, you could do the thing you outlined (swaping the disk manually) or you could get something that would allow you to transfer the games over the network. This still requires you to use VirtualPC (which is a pain in the ass). The easiest solution is just getting a modchip, imo.

Thanks for the sppedy reply ThinkDiff. I should have guessed you were a Mac user from that name! So you think my removing the top cover thing would work? The thing with the PS one game, I thought it might be something like that but when I put one of my old PS One games in, it didnt work. It only worked with the GPolice disk that came with it. Thats why I thought it was burnt onto that somehow. I did notice a peice of the memory card was used, it said corrupted data when I browsed it, is that right? Does that also mean if I ever delete that part of the mem card I'll lose HD Loader? Sorry for all these questions... The hard disk that came with it was a measly 40Gb Maxtor, as it happens I have a spare 160Gb Maxtor drive I could put in. I appreciate the PS2 would only see it as a 128Gb drive but would this weird GPolice disk copy of HD Loader format it?. As for modding the PS2, I didn't fancy soldering 20 odd wires into the PS2 thats why I thought the hard disk and HD loader was the way to go.

Yes, the corrupt data on the mem card is HDL. The reason why it only works from the G Police disk is because when you set up the mem card (this is called the Mem card exploit), you link it to a specific game or games. So depending on which game you put in, it will either boot from the MC or from the CD. Yes you can put the 160 in the PS2, and yes HDL will format it. Depending on the version of HDL you have, it will either read it as 128GB, like you said, or it will read it as the full 160. HDL has to be patched to read the full drive, but it is possible.

I have used Carracho in the past (and hotline before that, oldschool ;)), what type of server do you run? I got a 1mbit/sec upload to put to good use.

About the card.. it would be tough. Actually, maybe impossible without a swap magic or modchip (or PC that you could use HDL Dump or WinHIIP)

You mentioned a patched version of HD Loader, if I dont already have that version, can I download it? How would I then install it on my memory card. brb, just nipping out to the shop, the wifes' gasping for a fag.
