As has been said one million and one times, you don't need an official PS2 HDD to use HD Loader, or Open PS2 Loaders HDD mode.
You just need a Network adapter, and any IDE HDD except for the Western Digital brand.
No it doesn't matter where the Network adapter is from, they all work on all region FAT consoles.
If you are in the US, I have a Net Adapter for you. I might be willing to ship to Canada also.
Just PM me for details.

dear bro,
when I say I want a ps2 hdd I don't mean the disk itself.. I mean the damn thing to connect any ide hdd on ps2. I don't really care about the ethernet port (meaning that if there was a way to hard wire an hdd on ps2 myself I would give it a shot)
this network adapter that offers ide and ethernet interface is hard to find especially here in greece. I'd love to buy yours but you're on other end of the world :/
I'm starting to belive that those adapters never made it here in the first place. there's no retailer here that know that these things exist (and I don't mean now, I'm looking for quite some years all arround)
shame that there is no alternative like hd combo for the fat consoles

I found this one in a google search, it says it ships worldwide:
http://cgi.ebay.com/PS2-Network-Adap...18234006r31817
$40 US is the normal retail price for a NA, so this is a reasonable price for shiiping to your area from the US. This one is sold already, but you might have luck contacting the seller and see if he has more, ya never know.
Heres another one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PLAYSTATION-2-...item1c0ea6f285
PS2 Consoles:
SCPH-30001 [V4] - unmodded (2)
SCPH-30001-R [V5] DMS4 Pro SE
SCPH-50001-N [V9] CC 2.0 SLE
SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded

The old HDLoader elf is capable of doing both. It can also run the games after installation, but I honestly think you should stick to "Open PS2 Loader" (aka: OPL) for that, both for its present improvements over HDL as well as for further improvements soon to come. Here I am assuming that you have access to recent OPL betas, as the use of IDE HDD was not yet implemented when the stable release of v0.6 was made. But if you only have the stable OPL version, then you can use HDLoader to run those games for now, until the public release of OPL v0.7 is made (which will include IDE HDD support).
Another tool that can format the PS2 HDD for you and install games to it is WinHiip, which is a PC application. So for this you need to take the PS2 HDD and connect it to an extra interface of your PC instead, either on a PATA bus or using a USB-PATA adaptor (I do that myself sometimes).
There is also a networked server for the PS2 that can be used with a client program on the PC to handle game installation over network. This allows you to install from an ISO file or physical CDVD disc in the PC to the PS2 HDD still mounted in the PS2, by transferring both commands and ISO data over network. These networked tools are available in packages variously named as "HDL_Dumb", "HDL_Dump", "HDL_Dumx". The name confusion is due to the various components used. HDL_Dump is a command-line utility, HDL_Dumb is the GUI program which calls HDL_Dump for all real work (so in itself it is 'dumb'), while HDL_Dumx indicates a package containing all of it.
if not, how do I prep the hdd and dump games for use with opl??
All the tools mentioned above were designed for HDLoader, but also remain valid for use to maintain a game setup on a PS2 IDE HDD when running those games through OPL. There is no real difference except that OPL implements some additional features that HDLoader lacked, as well as OPL having better game compatibility.

The current betas are compatible to existing HDLoader game setups, but the stable v0.6 release has no drivers for this kind of HDD at all.

It is hard to state with certainty what a future release will have or not, but the current betas have no ability to install games to the HDD. So for the present at least that will need to be done with other tools. And of these tools HDLoader is the only one which can do the job using only a PS2, without needing any PC.
Best regards: dlanor
