I have a modded PS2 (some old messiah chip) with a 60gb harddrive and latest hdloader. Problem is that my dvd-drive is failing, and rarely succeeds in booting up hdloader from the dvd so that I can play games off the harddrive.

What's the most cost-effective solution for me to get my PS2 up and running again?

I am not familiar with that chip, but if it has Dev2 or Dev1, that would help. I think other people know this more then me. I have MI chip. hope this helps! If all else fails go to the Chip Website.

Nope, the messiah was one of the first no swap modchip, so i doubt it has Dev1 or Dev2 boot modes. I think your options are, tweak your DVD focus/laser, replace your DVD or replace the modchip...

try booting it from CDR instead?

also if you have the older ps2 and are able to boot psx games at all you could use the exploit method.

My DVD also has been failing (slowing down anyway) so I've switched to using the exploit (gave me practice to help others with the exploit as well). Picked up 2 Playstation "Classics" on sale at a MegaMart for $10 each. That's cheaper than fixing the laser.
