Even the slowest 40gb hard drive is going to have better read speed than the DVD rom does. The skipping on the movies inside of the game is caused by either your version of HDLOADER or the options you chose to launch the game.

Rcr-your more then likely running a 5200RPM drive..
Brasch is correct.. Any HDD will load games faster then DVD.. However its not noticed as much on older HDD's like what you have...

The current HDD's mostly run at 7200RPM.. But look real close at HDD's on future buys.. There are even HDD's that run as fast/faster then 10,000RPM.. Buts that pretty much over kill for the PS2.. They can still be used but they may in some way "over heat" sents there isent much ventialashion within the HDD bay...

As for the "skipping" with in movies or even games.. You would benifit from a good cleaning on the lens plus the DVD pot may need to be adjusted..
Plus cleaning the disk's are good as well but Im sure you allready know that..

But now days everyone for the most part are running 7200RPM HDD's

    La8er,

There isnt just one magic fixall version. You need to patch your own according to your needs to get the best results.
