Does a new HDD have to be formatted before use?
Does a new HDD have to be formatted before use? –
Can I just install a new Maxtor 300 Gb drive into my V9 PS2 and then set it up? I have a laptop, with no way of formatting a HDD unless it is done while installed in the PS2 and connected via network. Is formatting necessary? Can I install the HDD right out of the anti-static bag?
Short answer: no.

Put the HD in and launch HDLoader, if it doesn't find the system partitions it will ask to create them. HDLoader doesn't use a filesystem (correct me if i'm wrong) so you don't need to format the HD.
You are wrong on that...

On the next launch HDL then needs to scan every existing partition in order to rebuild that one file...
Also, regardless of the partition types and filesystems used, any HDD must be low-level formatted before use, and for normal PS2 usage some standard partitions also need to be created.
Fortunately HDL will do that work automatically if it notices that this is needed, as it should do for a brand new drive. But if that detection fails due to some previous usage of the drive, simply reformatting to NTFS under Windows will ensure that HDL will reformat the drive in your next attempt on the PS2.

Yeah, you're right, the system partition has a filesystem (probably the "__mbr" too, never checked), i was only thinking about the stored ISO images... (=

Model# L01Y300 - It's a 300 Gb HDD, with an extra 20 Gb thrown in for free by Maxtor. The HDD compatibility web site indicated that it worked for a V4 PS2 w/ HD Advance 3.0.
Man, I hope it works on my V9.
While I was on ebay for the HDD, I also picked up a PS2 network adapter.
Now all I need is my console to come home from Norcalmods, I'll be ready to put it all together and awe my friends! Thanks again for the replies, Rawking
The HDD model number you provided returned some results at http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/ It looks like it will work. Your model # results are HERE
