No. You can use FMCB to boot an HDLoader ELF or the newer Open PS2 Loader right off the memory card. You just need to find a way to get it installed to your memory card.
And to get FMCB installed ask one us here :

Hope one of us can help..

Sorry if I'm dragging up an old thread.
I have a similar issue as charmokete.
I've literally just installed the latest version of FMCB on my PS2 Fat and am wanting to run games off a HDD, preferably an external USB drive but if need be I can purchase a network adapter thing.
My problem is, now I have FMCB installed, how do I run games off a HDD? I've tried looking for a tutorial and info here and on different forums but nothing specifically tells you what to do. (I'm a bit of a nub at console modding n stuff)
I need to run my games from a hard drive because my PS2 is being annoying when reading discs, especially PS1 games, I have cleaned the reader and all that but it's just being real temperamental.
If someone could explain how to get a USB or Networked HDD to work to run games (PS1 + PS2) I would be really grateful, also what file do I need to back my games up to? Just ISO's or do they have to be them weird ELF things like the installers?
P.S. Sorry for the thread jack, I just didn't want to annoy anyone by posting the same thing twice.
Everything you need to install PS2 games onto an Internal or USB HDD can be found here: SKS Apps - Exploit Systems - Wii Ps3 Ps2 Apps - Homebrew Game Downloads
For an Internal HDD you will need to install Winhiip, and you will also need a method of connecting the hard drive to your computer. You can use the IDE ports on your motherboard or a USB to IDE adapter. Winhiip is fairly easy to use and accepts most forms of image, in addition to original discs.
For a USB HDD you have a little more choice. You can choose any of the utilities under "USB HardDrive" on the site, but I recommend USB Insane because it supports making ISOs from original discs in addition to copying both original discs and ISOs to the HDD. It doesn't have some of the patching features (largely redundant for OPL?) that you'd find in USBUtil for example but it's a lot easier to use in my opinion.
Once the games are on the drive, they should automatically be picked up by OPL. If you haven't used OPL before, it's just an ELF file which you run with uLE. Personally, I like to copy it to my memory card then use the FMCB Configurator to add it to the OSD, but it's up to you.
As for PS1 games, these are a different matter entirely. The only way you can play them discless is with this emulator: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f164/ps2...preview-64878/
Everything you need to know about using that should be found in that thread.
You my friend are a legend, I really didn't expect a reply so fast.
I'll try the USB HDD one as that would be the simplest for me at this point.
Thanks very much for the info.
