I have had a hard disc in my ps2 for about 2 years and all has been good until recently. Now often if I try to install a dvd game onto the hard disc, straight away (at 1%) I get the error message asking if I want to quit or try again (trying again and continuing with the installation does nothing). When I play the game directly from DVD it plays fine, boots up quickly so the laser seems ok. Anyone help me with this? I use HDLoader 0.8b patched with an 80gb Maxtor and Messiah 2.
Also, I see that really the best way is to install using HDL_Dump, for this which type of cable do I need? And do I need the software only on the PC or is there also software running on the PS2 at the same time, excuse my ignorance and thanks in advance.

If you want to install games images via network, you need "hdl_dump" running on the PC and the "hdld_svr.elf" running on the PS2, if you attach the PS2 HD on your PC, you only need "hdl_dump".

For the cable, if you have a router/switch/hub at home you only need a simple ethernet CAT5 patch cable, instead if you want to link your PS2 directly to your PC, you probably need an ethernet crossover patch cable...
