Can't we skip the MC exploit and install to HD right off the bat?
Can't we skip the MC exploit and install to HD right off the bat? –
I've read about the different methods of getting the exploit on to your memory card etc.. and some people then move it to the HD.
my questions is if I have a brand new HD why can't I just connect it to my computer and load up all the Elf files on it and stick into the ps2? why go through the damn trouble of getting things on to the MC first? Just doesn't make sense to me, so can some one explain please.
What I want to to do is run HDL for now, and that's all. so can I just copy it to the HD and have the ps2 boot from the HD?
first of all even if you do put hdl in your hard drive how is the ps2 even going to know its there the only way to do it is if you trigger it of the exploit in your mc using a psx game
That's the trick...

You can boot HDLoader from the hard drive, as well as any other homebrew ELF files you may have, but without using the exploit, the PS2 won't even *recognize* the hard drive. Booting HDLoader from the HDD uses an ELF loader (LaunchELF, Boot Advance, etc.) on the MC to then load the HDD modules (drivers) and then point the PS2 to the directory of the HDloader ELF. This is the method I prefer, since it saves valuable MC space by only needing the loader on the MC. Hope I cleared things up instead of confusing you more.
1. You need a way to boot homebrew and non-pressed CDs. There are a few ways - the most common are: the mc exploit or getting a modchip and making a boot cd with KeyLauncher (and any other ELFs you need - copy to the HD later)... also you could use a swap method or a modchip with a dev-mode.
You cannot make your PS2 HDD bootable in the same way as your PC. Never will a PS2 HDD be directly bootable without doing something in #1
2. Read for days all the stuff on this site before asking questions that have been answered many times before. There are also HowTo's everywhere here and on the net.
OK, sorry for being retarded here...but...
Can someone please give me a direct link to a thread covering how to install/copy .elf's over to the HDD??? I've tried searching...I get a bunch of results, but everything is either different than what I need or 50 pages long with outdated information coming first...
I haven't had time to check it out yet, but thanks rob487...
