Hey guys, I got the new SOCOM II map from OPM. Well, I used HDLoader to load the disk (w/ map) on the hard drive, went online to SOCOM and it said I didn't have an HDD or the map...

So I went back to the disk, tried to download it from the disk, and it said "HDD COULDNT INITIALIZE"

I assume this is beacuse it's not a Sony HDD? If that is the case, am I completely screwed when it comes to stuff like this? Someone told me on another forum that I could reformat this HDD with the Sony Utility HDD Disk then load HDLoader on there and it would work - but two problems with that

    1) According to the sony site, the Sony HDD Utility Disk doesn't work on non-sony hdd's

    2) I dont have a mod chip so even if I burned the HDD Utility Disk Somehow, it would be recognized by my PS2.

    Am I right or wrong?

Even if it were a sony disk, it wouldn't work. When hdloader is active, no other software can access the disk.

But can't you format the hdd using the HDD Utility Disk?

Basically, assuming I had a blank non-sony hdd, is any of the above possible regardless?

HDD Utility Disc will NOT recognize a non-Sony drive. It will say it can't detect a HDD, so it won't even let you get as far as trying to format it. You can format it to the PS2 file system with several computer programs, but that still won't enable the support, as the SOCOM II disc and the disc with the map on it (along with every official game disc with HDD support) scans for the Sony HDD firmware individually.

Only a Sony HDD will give you the support you are trying to use.

What if you patched the HDD Utility Disc with the ATAD.irx patcher? Wouldn't that let it see the HDD and format it or something?

It will be unable to connect online. To boot the backup you need to swap or use a chip. With the mandatory SOCOM2 Update, it detects this and you can/will be banned for doing so.

If the game is on HDLoader it will not see the Network Adapter, thus you can't go online. It is not possible without a Sony HDD, I'm tired of seeing this asked. I'm locking this, everyone should know by now.
