I have a 200Gb Seagate drive in my SCPH-50004 and its working fine so either PS2 or NA should no be the problem.

Recently i bought a WD3200AAJB 320Gb drive (listed two entries reported as working), brand new sealed in box, stick it up to PS2 and.. tadaa, HDL gives me error hdd not connected, same with DMS HDD Format tool.

With my Seagate drive, first time i used it it HDL asked me to format it, but i bought that used, guess it had windows installed in or something... Now with WD witch is new and unformatted, newer even plugged into a computer so is that the problem?

So is HDL required to have pre formatted drive to detect it or is my WD either doa or simply just not compatible. Reason im asking i cannot connect IDE HDD to my computer since i dont have those in my PC.

Is there reported cases that HDD works in ps2 but cannot format, therefore it should first be formatted with Winhiip before use?

When i installed my hdd i bought a brandnew drive. I formatted it with WinHiip (ide/usb adapter - very cheap!). No problems at all

I got myself a old dell.. So i formatted the drive using Winhiip 1.7.6, selected quick format and 48bit..

HDL still gives me same error. Is there any hope left or is this drive just incompatible?
EDIT: I have tried every possible combinations of jumpers, Master, Slave, Cable Select etc.. Does anyone have experience with WD drives? I had same problems with my seagate but it started working with two jumpers, Master with Slave OFF and Cable Select.

Try OPL(Open PS2 Loader) see if it still gives error if is do's not I would guess your HDL is older 28bit version or a bad convert

I have newer gotten any errors with opl, no matter is hd connected or not. I also tried to transfer some games to hdd with winhiip, no success with HDL(i have tried several versions) or OPL. uLaunchELF HDDManager gives HDD not connected, not formatted.

Myself i got three PS2, 30004, 50004 and 30004R, also i have two HDD:s, Seagate 200Gb and WD 10Gt, they both work in all of the consoles. I highly doubt the problem would be in the NA cause it works fine with other systems/hdds.

Right now i think its the drive is just not compatible or i somehow have wrong jumpers set. Meanwhile i trying to contact WD support if they have firmware update for that particular drive since its not out there public.

Yea if all that works ok but the WD HD then probably something wrong with that have you tried to check jumper config online to see if it is correct for master mode
HDL and OPL usually have to have it forced for most HD

Found the jumper settings for ya

Im familiar to the same picture. Tried all of them shown there.. No success.

EDIT: For all of my experience now i need to get that particular drive set to master with no slave and cable select at the same time. Just like with my Seagate one. Or some another WD trick im not aware of.

Does the disk even power up when accessed? If it doesn't, it's probably a bad case of a hardware incompatibility - the disk probably isn't receiving sufficient power to start up.
