Black screen after loading compatible games

I'm having issues loading the games because almost every game I've tried gives me a black screen (Dragon Quest VIII black screens after giving the option of screen size and sound and showing the Square-Enix logo)

I'm using a NTSC v5 ps2 that a friend gave me because it has a ****ed up DVD laser due to the chip installation, with uLaunchELF 3.41s and different HDLoaders (with several degrees of patching, from none to full), after I choose the game I see orange flashes from inside the PS2 (from the HDD) and then nothing (and the games that I've tried show up on the ps2hd as compatible).

The HDD was formatted within the HDLoader program and the games were installed with WinHIIP.

What do I need to fix and/or change? Is it possible to have compatibility issues due to the uLaunchELF and/or HDLoader version?

if the game is a DVD9, it could be that you would need to use DVD decrypter to make an image first and then use winhiip. did you check the compatibility. take a look at this site or another one to see if you have everything set for compatibility. i dont have this game yet, so i can't say much about it.

I'm told that Dirge of Cerberus has the same problem, with the black screen after the Square Enix logo. (Somewhat similar to the XS Episode 2 black screen, no?)

Gunstar Heroes has the black screen, but sadly you don't even get a company logo, so it's probably even less playable than these Square-Enix games. =(

Ok, after a while I tried with a whole lot of different prepatched HDLoader and even patched some myself (from an unpacked file) and it gets me the same result every time (black screen).

I've got some theories on what could be happening so I can change it, but first I want to know an educated opinion

1) The chip (I don't know the model, but I could find out if it matters) is somehow interfering with the loading of the games off the HDD
2) MC, to make the MC work I had to format it because it froze the ps2 every time I tried to load anything from it
3) uLaunch, I've got version 3.41s maybe it's that
4) maybe I offered the incorrect sacrifice to the ps2 deity, or maybe I didn't do the correct ritualistic dance beforehand

I really want to play DQ8 and KH2, so please I need to know what's going on with this
