My brother has been using HDLoader on a CD-R for about 2 months now, with a 30GB Maxtor HDD. It worked fine up until now, but lately every time he boots it, HDLoader reports that the HDD is unformatted and asks to format it. Maybe once in 50 tries it will actually work.

Eventually we got tired of it and told it to format the HDD. Then he went and installed Final Fantasy X through the PS2 and HDD's install thing. After it finished, the menu showed that the space was taken up, but the game list said there were no games installed. He reset the PS2 and it said the drive needed to be formatted again.

I tried the HDD in my PS2 and it worked perfectly. I could install games and all that. As soon as we put it back in my brother's PS2 it didn't work again.

Anyone have any idea? We've pretty much narrowed it down that it's solely my brother's PS2 that is not working right, as we tried switching network adapters, discs, PS2's etc and it will not work on my brother's PS2 at all, and works fine on mine.

sounds like a problem with his laser, if you can, try installing the compressed hdloader to his memory card and running hdloader from his card
