Just thought I'd chime in. I don't know much about the newest Maxtors, since I've had NO problems with the multiple Seagates I own and put into others' PCs. My old Maxtors were obcenely loud, one is acting funny, and run very hot.
One thing I can say is that recently my boss had to spend $1000 to recover data off of a WD drive due to it failing on him. Of the 4 drives in that server, it was the only WD.
Seagates (the newest) aren't the absolute coolest running drives, but they provide near the top speed, dont have the reliability issues that many other drives have, and are usually the quietest drives in their category. I still have a working 4.3gb seagate that has taken lots of abuse (pysical/heat/data).
