I wouldn't mind that. [EDIT: There are modchips that do this? Which ones?]
Also, I'm kind of confused here: I assumed talk of the "browser" referred to the one built into the BIOS, but now you're talking about installing something to the hard drive. Is it a patch, or something separate?

they are talking about seeing the hard drive in the browser much like you see memory cards in there

The HD utility disc installs browser extensions to the HD that the BIOS loads up on boot that allow you to copy saves to/from the HD itself and to run HD-installed games (the 'HD install' variety, not the HD Loader kind) from the browser.
The ***3, iirc, has automatic ATAD patching to allow you to use any HD. Other chips also have it, but none come immediately to mind..

Eh, wonderful. Didn't realize the name of the chip was considered to be unspeakable around these parts. The rules are getting nastier by the week.. *sigh*
Anyway, three letters long. You should be able to figure it out-- but if you look around, I'm sure you'll find others that are better liked in the community. I'm not really up on chips because I don't have one at all and don't keep track of them as well as I probably should.

Matrix Infinity also works for ATAD autopatching I believe, and is superior to that "other mod".

lol to that "other mod". who came up with the idea first?

how do you work the patch does it put a file on the hdd or what
-

No, it just automagically answers ATAD check calls as being OK just like the modchip already does CD/DVD checks. That's it. Unfortunately, ATAD patching from a modchip requires the modchip to be turned on, which screws with DNAS, so you couldn't run FFXI on it.

PS2 HDD ATAD.IRX Driver Modification
This is to patch the ATAD.IRX HDD driver file in both foreign (import) and domestic software that originally utilized the official PS2 hard disk drive... so it is NO LONGER necessary!
However, before getting too excited be aware that modifying the ATAD.IRX driver file will allow you to use a NON-$ONY drive only after it has been properly formatted.
With that being noted, to modify your ATAD.IRX driver file simply open up WinHex (http://www.winhex.com) or a similar Hex Editor and select Search -> Find Hex Values and change EACH occurrence to the following hex values by overwriting them:
Search for: D0FFBD2700210400FFFF8430 and change to 211000000800E00300000000 upon EACH occurrence throughout your ATAD.IRX file and then SAVE it.
To give you an idea on the number of occurrences, the ATAD.IRX file I am searching through has 6 occurrences of D0FFBD2700210400FFFF8430... so I changed all 6 to 211000000800E00300000000, and then replaced the ?modified? ATAD.IRX driver file in my iSO before burning it to disc. The number of occurrences WILL vary though with different software iSO files, so be aware to search it thoroughly to find them all before saving and burning back to disc
Search for differences
1. ATAD.IRX (virgin): 11,925 bytes
2. ATAD.IRX (modified): 11,925 bytes
