    hi everyone,
i have a 39001 fat model and nowadays ide hdd's is hard to find (and expensive) here in brazil... ide hdd upgrade for me out of question!

so i'm looking for a solution... i have a notebook sata hdd and i found some PATA (ide) to SATA adapters on ebay...
    here: http://cgi.ebay.com/SATA-PATA-IDE-Ad...item35ac49bf8d
i will try to use this with NA and power up a sata hdd on PS2

someone could help me with some information:
1- someone has used this kind adapter before?
2- is this adapter safe for this kind of use?
2- can i get read/write errors using this?

i used USBloader/extreme/OPL via USB but some games have a lot of stutter errors and speed problems...

    tks a lot!

Some people have had great success using converter cards between the Sony network adaptor and a SATA drive, though it usually means having to use a 2.5" drive, so as to have sufficient room in the PS2 HDD drive bay.

2- is this adapter safe for this kind of use?
That is very hard to say without testing.
Someone would have to be brave and just try it.

2- can i get read/write errors using this?
I don't see why, but I suppose it is possible, if badly designed or badly connected.

Again, this is the sort of thing someone would have to test in person to be certain of.

i used USBloader/extreme/OPL via USB but some games have a lot of stutter errors and speed problems...
Yes, the slow USB interface of the PS2 is notorious for causing such problems.
So even on my slim PSTwo consoles I have completely abandoned running games from USB.

Instead I always use LAN instead, with the SMB core of OPL running games which are stored on one of my computers running Windows XP (SP3). This works much better than using USB drives, with the large majority of games giving me no 'stutters' or other speed problems at all. With older revisions of OPL I still got a small amount of stutters in the long FMV sequences of FFXII and some other games, but with current beta revisions those problems are all gone.

Some very few games still have some odd problems with audio playback, but those seem not to be a case of transfer speed issues, but rather a case of lacking support for some streaming methods in the CDVD replacement modules, which is an entirely different matter.

However, now as always the presence or absence of speed problems also relies on how well your LAN is working, and I know that some others have results that differ from mine even when using the same OPL revisions and the same games. You need to try it yourself and possibly reoptimize your network to see if this is method is better for you than to continue using USB or buying SATA drives and adapting some converter to use them.

A real HDD interface in the PS2 will of course be faster in accessing game data for gameplay, but there are also negative sides to using it, such as having to install games either over LAN or by removing the drive from the PS2 and connecting it to PC instead (using WinHiip and/or other such tools).

Personally I find it very convenient to be able to play games through SMB access to the same ISO file collection on a PC that I would maintain anyway, for backup purposes. And it is nice that I can use the games in this collection from each one of my PS2 consoles, without having to move any drives or reinstall for each of them. As long as they have a LAN connection, each of these consoles has access to my full game collection. And since I also use the VMC branch of OPL a lot, each console also has access to the same gamesaves, without having to move any physical memory cards.

So I can continue a game campaign in progress using any one of my consoles, since both the game and its save data is accessed on the same PC no matter which console I use.

    Best regards: dlanor

that's interesting! i will try via LAN mode and see what i get...
but what about the compatibility? it has same compatibility (or very close) as HDL 0.8? do i need a 100Mb or a Gigabit network for it works?
    tks for help!

100Mb will work it do not even use over 15% of that to do SMB for OPL

Compatibility is even higher then HDL but some stuttering with network adapters but slim has even faster transfer rate less stuttering

Like FFXII stutter with network adapter for Fat PS2 but not with my slim version.

Yes, that is of course what I meant, and I have now corrected that typo in my previous post.

i wish they made it for PS2
It would of course be nice to have yet another FF game for the PS2, but I honestly think FFXII and even FFX are better games, though less advanced graphically. And a PS2 implementation of it would probably require total reworking of the graphics methods, reducing it to the same level as FFXII (which while excellent for its platform, can not compare to FFXIII on the PS3).

The public release of OPL v0.7 has approximately the same game compatibility as HDL v0.8b, though details may differ either way for a few games, due to implementation differencies.

The current beta releases, and thus the upcoming public release of OPL v0.8 has far greater compatibility than any version of HDL. This includes fixing such classical problems as the crashed 'Gummi ship missions' in "Kingdom Hearts 2", the failure of "The World" in the ".hack//" series, and many other problems of all previous game launchers.

do i need a 100Mb or a Gigabit network for it works?
No PS2 or PSTwo console can ever come close even to the full capacity of 100Mb, so that speed is amply sufficient. But some firewall and traffic filtering methods may still cause undue lag, so if you do notice such problems you may need to reconfigure some of your stuff.

As far as I know no Gigabit interface for the PS2 has ever been available and most certainly it never will be. There is no way the device driver system of the PS2 bios could possibly handle data transfers even close to such rates.

I myself have no Gigabit network equipment (pointless if you don't convert the entire LAN for it, which would be far too expensive for me), and I use all my games over LAN without any speed-induced problems.

Some few stutter problems still remain due to other causes, needing additional stream support in the CDVD emulation. But this is not an issue of speed as such, though one of the symptoms is similar to those of such problems.

You may be right about the fat PS2, in that it would be more likely to have speed issues. I seldom use my fat PS2 anymore, since its only real advantage (the HDD) is now eliminated by me playing all games over LAN instead.

I have very bad experiences with cheap adapters from Ebay.
During my tests on a PC with WinHIIP they were not working or only partially with errors. And if already WinHIIP error shows, I did not test it in my PS2s.

An identical adapter as specified by you worked incorrectly with me, during my tests with WinHiip.
But I have very good experience with an adapter from Delock.
And I have installed this IDE/SATA adapter in the PS2 Network Adapter.

The network adapter with a modem is the best choice. He has a larger case and the IDE/SATA adapter fits in completely. But you have to remove the modem from the network adapter. But the LAN connection still works.

At the NA without a modem, it is necessary to mill a hole in the back of the cabinet or the IDE/SATA adapter will not fit inside.

A few months ago I have made a tutorial for both versions of the network adapter.
And note the tutorials on the use of cheap large 3.5' SATA hard drives.

For 2.5' SATA hard drives, there are other possibilities or adapters without the need to modify the network adapter.
In the same thread links have been posted for an IDE/SATA adapter, especially for 2.5' SATA hard drives.
But I do not know if someone already purchased and tested this adapter.

for your experience, do you think i must try a NA adaptation for sata or just buy a IDE 3.5 to SATA 2.5 bridge?
none of these cheap adapters works for your? i try to find DeLock adapter on ebay, but only "china made" were found!!! it's true that it can damage your hdd? do you think acard ARS2133 bridge "can do the job" smoothly ?
sorry to many questions, but a easy way to use sata hd on ps2 worth a try!
ps: i'm reading your tutorial right now... congratulations for your work!
