I have just gotten my hdloader disc and a hard drive, and am soon to have my network adapter so I can get started. I've been researching hdloader, hdl_dumb, winhiip, and other things. Here are my questions....

If I use the newer versions of hdl_dumb and WinHIIP for loading games to the hdd, do I still need the .6 hdloader patch to get problem games working? Or will hdl_dumb and WinHIIP allow me to get these games working the original hdloader disk?

I have found ppf patches to get some games working. Do these work when only using hdloader or do they require a moded system?

Yes, to gain the advantage of the new patches you MUST use HDL 0.6d, since the patches are made to the executable of HDLoader itself, not to the game ISOs. All HDL_Dumb, WinHIIP, and other frontends can do in connection with this, is to allow you to set the new mode flags as needed, for the games they install. But if you use an old version of HDL, the new mode flags will just be ignored.

Well that depends on the patches, but most patches that work with mod-chip + CD-R will also work with non-mod + HDL. However, some PPF patches are no longer needed, and should therefore NOT be used with HDL 0.6d. Never use PPF for something that the new mode flags can deal with, as ISO patching often introduces a risk of breaking some aspect of the game.
