I am already considering getting a bigger HD and I don't even have a working setup yet

Whats the going price for any brand IDE 500GB HD? It's been a loooong time since I've done any HD hunting and I've found a Seagate 500GB IDE that is a reman for about $78 shipped, Is that a fair price? It's not on the HD compatibility list at all so that has be alittle worried about purchasing one. But Seagates has a good compataibility rate overall.

If you have an older IDE HDD in a computer you are currently using, I'd recommend just getting a large SATA drive for the computer and moving the IDE one to the PS2. Of course your computer's Motherboard must support SATA, or you'd have to buy a controller card.

Remember, don't get or use a Western Digital HDD if you don't want to hassle with modifying, and potentially breaking, the network adapter.

If you do buy a new IDE HDD, I recommend a samsung spinpoint series drives as they are super quiet and run very cool. Since the PS2 has no active cooling for the HDD bay, this is important for long gaming sessions.

Yup, western digital HD's are a bit wider and the conectors are separated just enough that they wont fit the network adapter, so you would have to mod it(its a bit tricky since you have to remove the metal cover; which is not just screwed on and also has some rivets; and cut a bit of the metal plate so one of the conectors can move a bit more).
Another option would be a Sata HD and a SATA to IDE adapter, but some modification is needed so they would both fit in your ps2.

SATA converted to IDE sounds like a good way to go, Does that actually work with the PS2?

I actually suggested this some time ago, I don't know if it will work, but if anyone was to test it, I'm sure they'd report their results here.

Now that's something to invest in! Are these available in the states? I would be willing to try it.

I think if you google search SATA 2.5 to IDE 3.5, you'll find it. They should be able to ship to the U.S. I'm keeping them in mind for when my HDD eventually wears out.
