I just got a new hard drive that's 160GB. I put some games on in 24bit, I think. But I don't know how to check. Here are my questions:

-Is each games partition either 24 or 48bit. Or is the whole drive formatted either way?

-Is there a problem with having some games in 24 and others in 48bit, if this is possible?

-Can 24bit games or a 24bit hard drive be formatted to 48bit without loosing everything?

I've been searching all over the forums without any answers. Thx for the help.

Well....if your PS2 is already detecting all 160GB of space then its already in 48bit. I don't think it has to do with formatting in 24bit or 48bit (unless i'm mistaken), but weather if HDloader software has the 48-bit patch or not. I don't understand much so can someone please confirm?

No, the whole drive is formatted to be either 24-bit or 48-bit.

    Not possible.

Not that I know of. The only way to change from 24-bit to 48-bit in PFS (Playstation File System) format, is to completely format the entire drive. There is currently no software out there for the PS2 that can switch formats without formatting (wiping the drive clean).

Yes, I completely understand. Sometimes it's very hard to find something, and you could spend days all because it hasn't been asked before, or is not easy to search for (too many results, etc.)

EDIT: Ok, what I meant to say was 28-bit LBA not LBA 24-bit LBA.

    Just some small corrections:
As far as I know, the main alternative to 48-bit LBA is not 24-bit LBA, but 28-bit LBA.

That's the format used by Sony for their original HDD kits, and which is also still used by homebrew software for drives smaller than 128GB. For drives larger than that, most homebrews currently default to using 48-bit LBA, but really old versions mostly never check size, and will use 28-bit LBA for all cases.

There's also a third format, created for ToxicOS, which uses special methods to allow programs made for 28-bit LBA only (eg: original Sony stuff and older homebrews) to work correctly using the first 128GB of a large drive, the size beyond that being reserved for ToxicOS and invisible to most other software.

Apart from ToxicOS itself, that third format is only supported by PC applications like WinHIIP (I'm not sure of HDL_Dump).

    Best regards: dlanor
