I really don't know what's wrong, but you can try this GUI: http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47734 (HDL_Dump GUI v1.5)
IIRC, you can extract games with that too.

Dont forget to open port (port forwarding) on 12345 via UDP if your running this through a router..
I have never had this issue as you have stated CYTO..
I have used this on a Vista x32, XP, 98, and on many Linux PC's with out issues..
Plus stick with the .8.6.elf on the PS2 side as .9.0 has had many issues for many users (even though many state the tranfer rate is over double of that of .8.6)
So in a nut shell ~ you have our PC set up on the network wrong or its just a software issue within Java on your PC thats causing issues..
As stated above just make sure your Gatway and your Subnet mask is set the same on the PC and PS2..
Also remember to add the port to the exseptions with in your PC (if your running Windows) as I did not do that once and the program would never find my PS2 sense the port was not open via Windows..
Its a bitch to get everything set up but its worth it as this is by far the best instaler I have seen yet (and I have used them all)..

Some corrections to previous posts by others:
The PS2-side server "hdld_svr.elf" v0.8.6 does not exist. The v0.8.6 package changes only affected the PC-side client, so the server was not included in that release at all.
The correct server to use with v0.8.6 of "hdl_dump.exe" is therefore v0.8.5 of "hdld_svr.elf".
But for all other versions it is imperative to always use the same version of PS2-side server as the version of the PC-side client program, since various modifications of the protocol can cause lockups or data corruption (which is worse, since it may go undetected), when mismatched versions are used.
So the advise in the previous post to stick with an older version specifically for the PS2-side must be considered misdirecting, as that phrasing implies that it would then be OK to keep using v0.9.0 for the PC-side client, which would in fact be doomed to fail.
Personally I consider the transition to UDP protocol as used in v0.9.x versions to be a total mistake, due to the unreliability of the transferred data, so I stick to using v0.8.5 of "hdld_svr.elf" and v0.8.6 of "hdl_dump.exe" as well as "hdl_dumb.exe".

Dlanor; In regards tord .8.6 hdld svr:
I understand that there was not a release of .8.6 of the server for the PS2 side (however others may not of~in this case disregard this message)..
however with in the release of 2.2 of the HDL Dump Helper the coder/auther of this program includes an .ELF named as "hdld_svr_086.elf" within the "FILES" folder..
Only reason why I did not state .8.5 is because that is not listed with in the authers compressed folder within his file he has here..
I just used .8.6 for less confussion and for less quiestions to be asked here as to why I would have stated .8.5 and not .8.6..
Hope this clears some issues on anyones end..

I guess I should download it and check it out.
Fine by me. For all practical purposes v0.8.5 is the valid v0.8.6 version as well, as far as the original HDL_DUMx project is concerned.Only reason why I did not state .8.5 is because that is not listed with in the authers compressed folder within his file he has here..
I just used .8.6 for less confussion and for less quiestions to be asked here as to why I would have stated .8.5 and not .8.6..
Kind of, but the best clarification would be if someone involved with this 'Helper' project could clarify the origin of that v0.8.6 server, and state if it contains any improvements or is just a copy of v0.8.5 .Hope this clears some issues on anyones end..

I can confirm that this hdld_svr_086.elf is just a renamed copy of v0.85 without any modifications.
I guess that was done to stop the noobs from asking why there is a client v0.86 and a server v0.85.
I suspected as much, but thanks for confirming it. (one less chore for me)
It does make sense, but it would have been even better if it had been done as part of the original project, so as to keep every release package consistent in having all three components (hdld_svr, hdl_dump and hdl_dumb).I guess that was done to stop the noobs from asking why there is a client v0.86 and a server v0.85.

For some odd reason I did not state that about the included .8.6.elf file..
With in the OSP it clearly states on the telly that this version of hdld_svr is .8.5...
I agree as the auther of the software more then likely just renamed it .8.6 just to make sure there was no confussions with in the manual of his app..
I should have stated this earlier~However did not for some odd reason..

Actually, it's not working on my fedora system, and I think I know why. You use sudo, and fedora strictly uses su. Is there any way you could make a root-run version? I run it using the su command, aand it still gives me the "wrong root password or not an hdloader hard drive" thing.
It looks really nice, though. Maybe the network version will work.
EDIT: By network version, I meant link through ethernet. Most people probably got that, just wanted to avoid confusion.
Edit2: Ugh, what a mess it is setting up ftp. Maybe I'll use something else.
