*Constant Updates* The PS2 HDD FAQ
*Constant Updates* The PS2 HDD FAQ –
Hi, it is my first post here, and I hope I don't cross any lines with trying to push for a sticky immediate. Still, I think there's a lack of a good FAQ - I've been checking around several forums and websites, each of which are either too thin on content about this topic or are too technical.
It's hoped that this can be a place for n00bs (like myself) from all over the world to get the answers to the top questions. That said, most of the questions I have here will need to be updated by your input, and I'll gladly update this too.
This first update *will* have plenty of holes - like - I don't know type of things, because, I don't know. If you find errors within what's been written, please post here about the offending material. I will certainly credit the person and his/her info.
I also hope that this FAQ expands beyond its few points to 10, or 20 - or whatever is necessary - when time comes and new information (and questions) are required.
Finally, I hope this does not become a place for people to rant about what doesn't work, or why won't it work. There are other threads for this.

What do you need to use the PS2 with a HDD (HardDisk Drive)?
Network adaptor, compatible HDD (http://ps2drives.x-pec.com) with PS2.
For games, you don't need a modchip if you're just backing up your original games with HD Loader (see below). If you intend to use already backed up games that are on CD-R, you need a modchip to back up your games from the backed up copy. Do note that I think you're only allowed one backup, however.
What can you do with the PS2 and a PS2 HDD?
So far, at least to me - outside of PS2 Games, it seems little. The PS2Dev people have this SDK and I've read about a media player and other cool stuff. But because I know not of how to install this, or someone who does and has, I hope some techie guy can fill this up for us n00bs.

- Playing PS2 Games - HD Loader
With HD Loader you can make a copy/backup of your game to your PS2. You need the HD Loader CD to load the user interface (aka menu) for your installed games.
I have read that you can use a memory card to boot using HD Loader or burn a copy of HD Loader from the net or something. Both require you a modchip (as with any backup/burnt games). The details of this are not here for obvious reasons (see sticky about HD Loader links).
Are there any tools besides for HD Loader that can do something else to the HDD? As in, can you load the HDD to a PC and write stuff to it? Or through an Ethernet port?
I don't know. I have read about utilities and such, but because I don't know much about them, I hope someone who knows can fill this up too.
What is the best mod chip for use with an HD Loader
I've looked around a few forums, and for now its between Matrix Infinity and DMS 3. Both are flash upgradable, but I'm not entirely sure about the slight variations between the two - there are many and I'm just not technical enough to understand them. Hopefully some vet here can put this up. I do know that for now DMS 3 allows for PAL games on NTSC systems, so that's always a plus.
