PS2 dvd driver update with fmcb?

sorry if this has been addressed before, but is it possible to update the DVD driver in the PS2 (in my case a US v1, and also a PAL v3 I have) in a similar way to how fmcb does for the osd update? perhaps by even somehow using fmcb itself to decypt and "sign" the update for a memory card? i heard that the older versions of fmcb used to allow you to do this, but not the current 1.8. because I got this remote control from a friend who lost the CD a long time ago and its kind of useless without the update disc.

by the way, the guy who installed the fmcb on my card for mentioned a "dvdelf.bin". is this a dvd player update, or something different altogether?

the dvd.elf is actually the extracted osdmain.elf but is renamed to 'dvdplayer.elf.' your question has actually been addressed before and burdensome issue is that the dvd driver update takes up a considerable amount of space in the mc (memory card). PS2 v9 and on already have the dvd drivers for newer remotes.

edit: osdsys.elf to 'osdmain.elf' and dvd.elf to dvdplayer.elf.

ah, so that explains the purpose of the dvdbin.elf. thanks for that man. but about the driver update, i'm not fussed about space since I have a perfectly working 128 mb memory card that I bought from ***********. from what i've read the update should only take up about 2 mb or so, so it's nothing for me.

so that brings me to the original question again: is this actually possible to do, by using fmcb to update the dvd driver in a similar way to how it does for the dvdbin.elf? and do the older versions of fmcb incldue this ability like i've heard before?
and if not directly possible through fmcb, could this be done in an alternative way? surely we guys who have the remote + IR dongle and such old PS2s as mine (v1 and v3) can't be out of luck.

to manually update the dvd player driver to 4.32u, do the following...

1. you will be doing this in uLe (uLaunchELF) and you need a usb flashdrive with plenty of space.

2. the file 'BxEXECDVDPLAYER' will need to be renamed. the rename occurs to 'BxEXEC... the letters allude to the following regions A for NTSC, B for PAL, and I for NTSC-J. so if your console is from the U.S. then rename the folder to BAEXEC..now copy the folder to your usb flash drive and plug it in to your PS2 as you will use uLE to access it.

3. in uLE browse to the ms0: or ms1: 'memory card-port' where fmcb is located. locate the BAEXECsystem sub-folder and inside there is one particular file that you need. bring to cursor to highlight (in red) the 'osdmain.elf" and then press R1 on your controller and choose 'copy.' in uLE browse to mass: directory to access your flash drive and now press R1 again to paste the osdmain.elf file to the root directory in your flash drive.

4. the BxEXECDVDPLAYER folder and osdmain.elf need to be in root directory of your flash drive. in uLE, press R1 and rename the osdmain.elf to 'dvdplayer.elf' and once more copy & paste dvdplayer.elf to the BAEXECDVDPLAYER folder. again, copy and paste the BAEXECDVDPLAYER folder to the memory card port (ms0: or ms1: ) of the root directory.

5. reset your PS2 and in the fmcb menu, press triagle to display the version info and 'dvd player' must say 4.32u instead of the earlier one (dvd driver).

6. v9 and on PS2s have the built in IR receiver for remotes which replaced the older dvd remote receiver dongle where you had to it hook up to a memory card port to receive signal commands from the dvd remote. the driver doesn't change integrate the internal IR receiver and this means that you still need to hook up with the dongle.

hopefully that the newer dvd player driver will give you functionality for the newer dvd player remotes (with the green reset button).

That won't work. For several reasons:

1- The DVD driver is not just the dvdplayer.elf file. It also use an encrypted IRX file.

2- Placing a FCMB encrypted elf file as dvdplayer.elf will merely have the effect of booting FCMB when you insert a DVD Video disc.

3- You need to install the DVD player update from the disc and there is no workaround to bypass that.

4- The Memory Card install process is dependent on the "DISC-ID" so if you have a modchip it should be disabled.

5- Due to the need of "DISC-ID" to authenticate and sign the DVD Player files, obviously CD-R copies of the DVD Utility disc are useless.

@hajile: i forgot to upload the files needed earlier. anyway i went ahead and compiled the BAexec dvd player folder with everything needed. so in uLE just copy it over to the main directory of your memory card. try it and see if it works with the newer dvd remote that you have.

@noetikos: sadly it didn't work. although the "version" screen reported the new version, when i booted it up by inserting a DVD it just reverted to the original one, i know this since the icons weren't the updated ones that you would see on a 50k or slim console, and the remote function buttons did not respond. it was the older remote with dongle btw, not the newer one for the 50k and slims with reset button.

@l_oliveira: man, i knew it wouldn't be as easy as i thought. but the problem is that i don't have any utility disc for my US v1 and none of my friends seem to have one, and it's going to be damn-near impossible to find a PAL update disc in the states for my PAL v3.

but i was wondering about this: since OPS2L can provide a game with its "DISC-ID", would it work for a copy of the utility disc if booted on a correct region console?

and you're saying that it wouldn't work either if one were to extract the ROM from a newer console?

It would only work if you replace the whole ROM for your console. But then the 50001 ROM won't boot on your USV1 due to differences on the IOP processor itself.

The only solution for you is procure a utility disc. if I could find the original files data on my HDD utility disc we could try to sign them on your PS2/memory card and using tools that were used back then when FMCB was being developed.

The HDD utility disc can install the US driver 3.00U or 3.11U I'm not sure which it installs.
